How He Won Her.

(Manchester Union, New Hampshire.)

Someone has remarked that absence makes the heart grow fonder of somebody else, and certain it is that propinquity has much to do with the force of ones emo- tions. So Peter Cummisky of Farmington found it, as related by the News of that place, which publishes the marriage of that gentleman to Miss Martha Ellen McCarthy of Prince Edward Island, and appends a brief sketch of the circumstances whicli led up to the happy event. It appears that no longer ago than the 21st ult. Mr. Cummis- ky, who was employed at Farmington, re- ceived a telegram informing him that his whom he had left behind in his native isle was to be married in a few days to a young man who had remained at home to woo, instead of seeking his tortune abroad. This was sud- den news—telegrams usually are if properly directed, but Mr. Cummiskey did not tear his brains out or go ona spree. He simply obtained leave of absence from his employer, telegraphed a friend in Prince Edward Islandj that he was coming, and quietly took a train for the provinces. In the meantime the friend met Miss McCarthy, and advised her to think matters over a little before she mar- ried the stay-at-home lover. She accord- ingly delayed a bit, and while she delayed Mr. Cummiskey arrived. There was a4 meeting, the other fellow was not at hand, propinquity, already referred to, did the business, and a few hours later the happy couple were on their way to Farmington. They were married at Rochester, Sept. 1, by Rev.! Father Bradley. Thus runs the simple tale, the moral of which seems to be that, if a fellow likes a girl and means to get her, he should contrive to pass a portion of his time in her immediate vicinity.

Are Your Hens Healthy?

Owing to extreme heat, moisture and other causes, there has been much dullness and disease among poultry the past summer, and especially among chickens and young pullets expected to lay this fall and winter. For this reason it would be a great mistake to kil! off all the old hens when the moult- ing season is at hand and the hens have stopped laying, get fat, and seem to be eating their heads off ; because it is a fact that a year old hen, if properly cared for helped in the moulting season to get her new coat quickly so she can be got to laying early, will lay more and better eggs than young pullets, particularly if the pullets are weakened by diarrhasa, cholera, gapes, etc. Many people have learned by ex- perience that Sheridan’s Condition Powder given once, daily, in the food, wil} supply the needed material to strengthen and in- vigorate sick chickens or moulting hens and get them to laying earlier than any- thing else on earth. Mrs. Edwin Brown, East Grsenwich, R. I., says: ‘*1 could not do without Sheridan’s Condition Powder when hens are moulting. It is the only thing to keep them healthy. I use it for gapes and diarrhoea, for when chickens are small they often droop and die. Toa pint of clabbered milk I add a teaspoonful of the powder, mix well, and let the chicks eat all they will once a day; it does seem to be just what they need, they soon become

so vigorous. People laughed at me when [ began to use Sheridan's Powder, and I had no idea I

should win a premium. They laugh best who laugh last, however. ! got more eggs than any of my neighbors, and some of them had over 100 hens. Treatment of Pneumonia by Appli cation of Ice.

Dr. ;Fieandt, writing in Duodecim, a Finnish medical journal, states that he has now treated no less than 106 cases cases of pneumonia with ice, and with the best results. Though ten of the cases were of double pneumonia, only three out of the whole number succumbed, notwithstanding that the epidemic was by no means a slight one. The method adopted was to apply over the affected lung an Indian-rubber bag containing ice continuously for from twelve to twenty-four hours after the crisis. In addition to the local treatment the patients were given such Smedicines as are equally employed, that is to say, opium, ipecacuanha, digitalis, brandy, ete. The method hrs, we may remark, received of late some attention in this country.—Lon- don Lancet.
