A Night of Horror.

food if any substance has been mixed with it which impairs its qnality or strength, if an inferior or cheaper article is substituted for that purported to be sold, if any valu- able constitutent of the article has been taken away, or if the article consists in part or wholly of any deceased or decom- posed substance, or, in the case of milk or. butter, is the product of a deceased animal. The penalty for violation of the act by adulteration of food or drugs is not more than $50 or less than $10 for the first offence, if the adulteration is injurious to the health, with much larger penalties for subsequent offences. In case the substance is not injurious to health, the maximum penalty for the first eftence is $30, and for the second $100. The penalty for the sale of adulterated articles ia also heavy. In addition, the goods so adulterated are forfeited to the crown. The sale of watered milk is an offence under this act, as is the sale of skimmed milk unless specially asked for by the purchaser. The act provides for the appointment of # chief analyst for the Dominion and of efficient analyst for various districts. The local inspectors of food, é&c., are empowered to call upon the analysis to analyze any samples of food, drugs, or fertilizers, as may inland revenue ofticers, and certaig other specified officers. ————— - Se

A daily newspaper has been started in Greenland. During the year when the days are three months long the editor doesn’t get down to the office until three weeks after breakfast, and stops work two months before sundown, An editor can get upa pretty good paper in eight or nine days, if he has a large exchange list and a sharp pair of scissors.

The boiler in Stokes Bros.’ flouring mill at Wyoming, Ont., exploded last week, killing David Service, the engineer, and badly wrecking the building. A young man named Robert Brown was also very seriously hurt. A number of millwrights who were putting machinery into the mill all esvaped without serious injuries. it is believed low water in the boiler was the cause of the explosion.

Frank Phillips, of Bethel, Sullivan Co., N.8., when going to church on a recent Sunday, saw a bear lying under a stump near the road. He got « rifle and a couple of friends with rifles, and they attacked the bear. She would not run, bat fought gamely, and was not killed until thirteen shots had been fired at her. Then it was found that she had been protecting four baby bears, only a few hours oid.

The population of London now exceeds every other city, ancient or modern, in the world. New York and all its adjacent cities combined are not equal to two-thirds of it.
