Ata regular meeting of the Benevolent Irish Society on the J7th inst., the fol- lowing resolution of condolence was passed:

Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God in His Divine w slom to call from us our much esteemed and bighly respected brother, the Jate John Hughes; and

W bereas,the members of the Benevolent Irish Society, E uerald, have learned with deep feelings of sorrow of the sudden and untimely deata of such au esteemed mem- ber of this Society.

Be it resolved that we extend to Mrs. Hughes and tam'ly the as-urauce of our heartfelt sympathy in the great sorrow, which has fallen upon them through the loss of a model husband and loving father, whose sudden aad unexpected death bas ended an exemplary life, well spent ip works of uxefviness and in the practice ot manly and christian virtues.

Be it further reso!ved that these resolu- tions be incorporated in the minutes of this Society. and that copies be forwarded tothe sorely bereaved wife and famiy and to the Watchman and Examiner fur

publication. So with him now life’s journey is oer,and in his native parish his

remains are silently resting while his soul bas been summoned toa bigher and brigbter world far beyond the confines of earth. By his death the province has lost an honest, upright man, the church a true and faithful member, the community of Emerald an ideal and respectable citizen, his wife a kind and zealous husband, and his family » model and loving father. To his sorrowing wife and bereaved family onr heartfelt sympathy flows out, while we prav God to give them fortitude and strength to bear the irreparable loss they have sustained. May his soul rest in pace.

The illness of Mrs. Beek, wife of the anditer general, has attracted much

regret her numerous friends entertain at her serious condnion, bat also of the remarkable character of her case. On

Dominion day, July Ist, she wae stricken with paralysis and since that time she has not taken one morsel of food, only a few glasses of cold water, which she swallows with the yreatest difficulty, her throat being partially paralyzed. She hae no craving fur food, her digestive organs are peraly zed, and while perfectly conscious, she is unable to utter a word to her watch- ing anxious friends. She has the use of ene hand, however, and with this she makes her wants kvown by writing on aslate. She is apparently suffering no pain,and sleeps comfortably some hours every day. Eigiteen days without food will reduce the strongest person to a skele-
