Says Cape Breton Park Area ls Given Up ’With Regret’
OTTAWA (OP) ~ The federal government is giving up “with much regret” 10 square miles of Cape Breton Highlands National Park for power development pur- poses, Resources Minister Hamil- ton said Wednesday.
But he informed the Commons that.in return Nova Scetia has handed over “very Valuable" property near the historic Champ- lain habitation which the historic sites board had long wanted.

The federal government had tried to get a similar area else- where in Cape Breton to add to the park and offset the loss, the minister said. An area northwest of, the park was considered but the existence of several fishing villages there made the situation too complex. . -
The Champlain habitation, near Port Royal, is the spot where lSamuel de Champlain spent some time in 1605.
Robert Muir (PC—Cape Breton North and Victoria) urged the government to take another look at chances of extending the Cape Breton-park farther north, where “very picturesque country" was available.
