In order to mitigate as far as possible the disastrous results of the Crawford-Dilke scandal, the Liberals are circulating a state. ment to the effect that Sir Charles Dilke denies that he had criminal intercouse with Mrs. Crawford, and that to-day she herself has withdrawn the confession made to her husband; and when in the witness box she will declare that the confession was made under hysterical delusion.
_ Crawfords friends, on the other hand, insist that he has evidence apart from his wife's confession, but that he will not per- severe in the action he has begun, unless convinced that it is perfectly justifiable and

Tue last Cape Ann Advertiser says: The best mackerel fare of the season was brought in by the schooner Mollie Adams, Capt. Solomon Jacobs, from the Bay St. Lawrence, on Sunday. She had been gone from home five weeks, and had sent home 200 bbls. during that time, making her total catch 920 bbls.

The latest sufferer is Mrs, Haliday, wife of the assistant pastor of Piymouth Church, Brooklyn, who slipped on # banana skin on the sidewalk afew days ago and fell, breaklng her hip, an accident which Will probably result fatally in her case owing to her advanced age.

General Booth, of the Salvation Army, is in trouble about a girl He is accused by a Mrs. Armstrong of sending an agent to decoy her daughter from her hom» for the purpose of making the girl a spectacle as a minor who was saved from a life of wicked- ness by the Salvationists. General Booth refused to give up the girl, and the mother has applied to the courts.

A Manslaughter Case.
FATAL RESULT OF THE CARELESS USE OF
FIREARMS,
On Wednesday last, Judge Senkler, of Perth, heard the case of Patrick Ryan, son of Hugh Ryan, contractor, found guilty of maaslaughter by a coroner’s jury. Some weeks ago the young man went into the garden to test anew rifle, and used as a mark the seat of a swing. The bullet passed through the beard, a boundary fence and a box, after which it entered the back of Charles Cooper, seated ina chair amusing himself with a violin, passed from the right side of the spine through the young man’s bowels, and was found afterwards in his clothes in front with a piece of flesh clinging to it. Young Ryan, almost distracted by the result of his shooting, did all in his power to aid the doctors, but the wounded man died, and the jury brought in the verdict indicated.

Who has not read or heard of the grains of wheat, thousands of years old, found in the wrappings of Eyyptian mummies, and which grains duly germipaled on being planted? Grave doubts are now cast upon the story. The New York Journal of Com- merce, in reply to correspondents, says :—
We doubt if there is any well authenti- cated case of a grain of wheat retainimg the
power of germinati a decade, snd certainly after twenty the case would be hopeless. The samples in the British
Museum were undoubtedly Egyptian wheat, as they had the three spikes peculiar to that variety ; and the grains probably came to England with a veritable mummy, as this was packed in straw ; but Dr. Birch, of the museum, when written to on the sub- ject, declared positively that the grains could not have been found inside of the antique wrappings, and were evidently a late Egyptian harvest.
