Recitals Display Students’ Talents

The UPEI Department of Music Recital Series is presenting five student recitals in the next two weeks. That's right, five opportunities to witness the great musical talent coming from UPEI. This is definitely not to be missed.

On Tuesday, March 11 the UPEI Department of Music Recital Series is pre- senting Living Composers’ Society- New compositions by the students of the UPEI Department of Music Composition class. Featured composers include Brodie MacRae, Amy Allen, Jeremy Hickey, Allalie Bent, Mark Himmelman, Stephanie Cole, Matthew Simon, Ken Wong, Dr. Frances Gray and the class instructor, Dr. Jim Dickson. The pieces vary greatly in style and instrumentation and make for an exciting evening of new music. Admission is free.

Following this are two senior recitals and four junior recitals. Neil MacQuarrie, tuba, will present his senior recital on Saturday, March 15 at 8:00. Laura MacGrath, clarinet, and Angela Mason, flute, will present their junior recitals on Sunday, March 16 at 3:00. On Thursday, March 20, Jeremy Hickey, tenor, will perform his senior recital at 8:00. Amy Allen, clarinet, and Celeste Brink, saxophone, will perform their junior recitals on Saturday, March 22 at 8:00. These recitals are presented in partial ful- filment of Music 332 and 432 and admis- sion is free. Everyone is welcome.

Neil MacQuarrie is in his final year of his Bachelor of Music studying the tuba under the direction of Dr. Gregory Irvine. He is currently in the process of preparing auditions for graduate work in the fall. He is currently the principal

the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. He will be assisted by Frances McBurnie, piano, the UPEI Trombone Trio, and the UPEI Brass Band. His program will include works by Edward Gregson, Marcello and Canadian Oskar Morawetz amongst others. 3 Laura MacGrath is a third year clarinetist from Truro, Nova Scotia study-

ing under Dr. Karem Simon. Laura is cur- rently the principal clarinetist with UPEI Wind Symphony and was selected to per- form Weber's Concertino for solo clarinet in the UPEI Wind Symphony's perform- ance in November. She has performed with the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra for the past three years and with the Ceremonial Guard in Ottawa for the past two summers. Her program will include works by Mozart, Poulenc and Sutermeister and she will be assisted by Frances McBurnie, piano.

Angela Mason is in her third year of the Bachelor of Music Education pro- gram at UPEI, studying flute. Angela is from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and has participated extensively in the music pro- gram at New Glasgow High School. During her high school career she partici- pated in various community ensembles as well as the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble. Currently she is studying with Dr. Kay Diviney and has previously stud- ied music with Andrew and Janice Alcorn as well as Vesta Mosher (New Glasgow). Angela was a finalist in the 2003 UPEI Performance Competition and is presently the principle flautist of the UPEI Wind Symphony. Accompanied by Frances McBurnie, Angela will be performing works by Pergolesi, Poulenc and Hindemith.

both chorister and soloist in UPEI Chorus and Chamber Singers. Jeremy was the recipient of the Mathis Award for voice at UPEI for the past two years and appeared as a finalist in the last two Music Performance Competitions at UPEI, plac- ing third in 2002. In the summer of 2002, Jeremy joined the CAMMAC Fiftieth Anniversary Chorus as a chorister for per- formances in Nova Scotia and Carnegie Hall in New York City. He recently appeared as Aeneas in the UPEI Music Department and Dance Umbrella's produc- tion of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. In his senior recital, Jeremy will be performing works by Handel, Schumann, Brahms, Obradors, Poulenc and more. He will be assisted by Mark Ramsay and Donald Frasier, piano, Tina Bouey and Kinley

Amy Allen is a third-year clar- inetist from Charlottetown studying under Dr. Karem Simon. She has performed with the UPEI Wind Symphony for the past three years and won first place in the 2003 UPEI Performance Competition. She will be assisted by Mark Ramsay, piano and her program will include works by Brahms, Stamitz and Lutoslawski.

Celeste Brink is in her third year of studying toward a B. Mu. Ed. degree at UPEI . During her academic career she has studied the alto saxophone with Rowan Fitzgerald and Dr. Karem Simon. She graduated with honours from Westisle High School. Celeste is currently the prin- cipal saxophone player in the UPEI Wind Symphony. She will be assisted by Frances McBurnie and Jacqueline Sorensen, piano. Her program includes works by Bach, Wolfgang Jacobi, Alexander Glazunov.
