We regret to learn of the death, in New York, where he had been under medical treat- ment, of Mr. Selwyn H. Shreve, of Halifax. The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Major Wright, of Centreville, and of Mrs. Dr. Jamie- son, of Summerside.
We are pleased to learn that Mr. Alfred Jeer, (sonof the late Mayor Beer) who visited his friends in this city a few months ago, hus secured « position on the Mexican Nati nal Railway, Mexico, at a salary of $160 a month.
Mr, W. E. Bagnall and wife, of North Bay, Ont., are visiting their relatives and friends in the city.
Mayor O' Mullin, of Halifax, is in the city.

A Svuspiciovs CHanacter.—A Moncton despatch of the 26th tothe St. John Telegraph says: ** Conductor McDougall, who brought in the accommodation from the north side this afternoon, informed Deputy Sheriff Hen- derson that two suspicious men, supposed to be burglars who had been ‘‘ doing ” Dalhousie ahd points north, had boarded the train at that Junction and got off at this station. The Deputy Sheriff and Marshal Thibedeau went in search of them and met one in front of the Hotel Brunswick. They arrested and searched him and ‘found $115 in notes and silver, a revolver, a package of Fuller's earth, and a poeket map of the Maritime Provinces. He was locked up, and search made for the other one. His companion was seen on Upper Main street, but Jwhen he saw the police he ran, fellowed by Thibedeau, who chased him about a mile up the northern track, when the fugitive took to the woods and disappeared ; he had not been captured up to 9 o'clock. The

Janiel Baker, of Souris, P. E. L, and said he was onhis way to St. John or Shediac.

IMPOSING CEREMONIAL.
BERLIN, June 27.
The opening of the Landtag to-day was accompanied by an imposing ceremonial similar to that observed when the Reich- stag met. The white hall of the old castle was again the scene of the ceremonies. he King entered the hall followed by the royal princes. The Queen and Princess occupied a dais to the right of the throne. The members of the two houses of the Landtag were stationed opposite the throne. The members of the upper house on the right and those of the Lower House on the left side. As soon as the King arrived, the President of the Upper House proposed cheers for him, and they were given with enthusiasm. The King did not remove his helmet while reading his speech. The chief passage of the ad- dress were loudly applauded. When he had finished the King extended his hand to Prince Bismarck, who, bow- ing low, kissed it. After bowing to the assembly, the King left the room amid enthusiastic cheering.
The Dowager Empress Victoria to-day received the President and Vice-President ot the Reichstag, who presented her with an address of condolence, on account of the death of the Emperor Frederick. They atterwards waited upon the Emperor an presented him with the reply of the Reich stag, and the speech from the throne.
Ottawa News. Orrawa, June 27.
Mr. Robertson, Manager of the Joggins raft interviewed the Minister of Justice and Minister of Customs to-day in reference to the recent seizure of steel wire. It is un- derstood that the wire will be released on payment of duty, no fine being imposed. The timber comprising the raft will be sub- —— to an export duty of $1 per thousand eet.
The auditing of the Intercolonial Rail- way account, which has heretofore been done by Financial Inspector Tims, will hereafter be performed under supervision of the Auditor General.
Absconding Cashier Arrested.
Monrreat, June 27.
Chas. A. Pitcher, of Province, teller of the Union Bank there, arrived here yester- day and registered at the St. Lawrence Hallas J. A. Robertson, of Fall River, Mass. He was arrested by Detective Kel- lert, who had received information and had been watching him. The prisoner had purchased a ticket by the Allan Line, and intended leaving for England to-day. He was taken to his room and searched, and Detective Kellert states that security and cash amounting to ,$700,000 were found on him. The prisoner took his arrest cooly.
Relieving the Sufferers. Sr. Louis, June 26. Despatches from El Paso to-day say: ** Steps are being taken for the relief of the sufferers by the overflows along the line of the Mexican Central Railway. It seems that at least 1500 people were drowned in the Leon alone. Over 10,000 bodies have already been recovered. Insome districts the drifting water is full of dead bodies, floating as thick as driftwood. Measures have been taken all over Mexico, to raise funds for the sufferers
Bishop Cleary’s Reception.
Kiyeston, June 27.
Bishop Cleary, who has just returned from Rome, reached Kingston this evening and was accorded a warm reception. He was escorted from the landing to the palace by a procession composed of Irish societies and citizens, accompanied by two bands of music. Many delegates and nearly all the priests of the diocese were present.

SHANGHAI, June 27. Nine government officials were beheaded in the streets at Scotel by the populace. All foreigners have taken refuge at the Consulate’s. The outbreak is attributed to Chinese instigation.

Wilful Murder.
Montreal, June 27.
The inquest on Thomas Donnelly, shot by young Jack Kehoe, has been concluded. A verdict of wilful murder was rendered against Kehoe.
Queen’s University. Kingston, June 27. Dr. Smith, General Secretary of Queen’s University, proposes raising $60,000 with which to endow a chair in honor of Princi- pal Grant.

FIRST DAY'S PROCEEDINGS.
Moncton, June 27.
The Conference of New Brunswick and P. E. Island,in connection with the Metho- dist Church, opened at 9 o'clock this morn- ing in the Methodist Church.
The President, Rev. D. Wilson, occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members.
Conference opened with the hymn, ‘‘ A Charge to Keep I Have, etc,” after which Rev. Mr. Daniel and Mr. Samuel Read led in prayer, followed by singing and prayer by Rev. Messrs. Smallwood and Jost, and Messrs. J. Samonson and Charles Strong.
The roll was called, and 80 members an- swered to their names.
The election of officers was then proceed- ed with. Rev. C. H. Paisley, A. M., of Hillsboro, was elected President, and on taking the chair, in a few well chosen words, conveyed his appreciation of the kindness shown him by the members of the Conference by electing him to the high position. He hoped he would be able to perform the duties in some manner similar to the way they had been performed by his predecessor.
Rev. Thomas Marshall, of Carleton, was elected Secrttary, and Rev. James Crisp and G, W. Strong were appointed Assistant Secretaries.
The bounds of Conference were fixed and the hours of meeting were appoin ed as follows: 8.30 to 11.30, and 14 to 17 o'clock, standard time.
It was decided that the persons elected at the district meetings be the nominating committee for the present year.
The programme for the Missionary meet- ing to-night was adopted and announce- ments were inade.
The afternoon session Opened with sing- ing and prayer by Rev. Mr. Howie.
On motion of Rev. Mr. Shenton the thanks of the Conference were extended to Rev. Dr. Wilson for the fidelity with which he had discharged the duties of his office as President during the past year.
The thanks of the Conference were also tendered to Rev. Mr. Paisley, the retiring Secretary and to the assisting Secretaries Rev. Jas. Crispand C. W. Strong.
This evening a public missionary meet- ing was held in the Church, the attendance — very large. Paisley occupied the chair.
