Unlike most birds, the female hummer selects her nesting area. and begins to build the nest before searching out a mate. When she finds him, she completes the nest, lays the pair of white eggs, incubates them solo, and cares for the youngsters until they are ready to go on their own.

For the past two or three years I have been able to observe the doings of a pair of huinniingbirds in our back yard. After much ey- lng about for a site in which to build a. nest. a thickly follaged cur- rant. tree was chosen. The nest itself was about 1': inches in out- side diameter and a little less in height. The inner cup, about.,one inch in depth and diameter was lined with thistle down. The pulpy part of the nest was bound together with spider webs. Two weeks after we saw the two tiny white eggs, I parted the leaves of the currant tree to take my second peep at the wonderhouse. Instead of the two white eggs I was amazed to see a oouble of helpless, naked, black. and blind creatures, no big- ger than a honey bee!
