The Indian is the Sybarite of the northland, and the only genuine So- cialist on earth. He holds all the pos- sessions of his country equally with his tribe, feasts and fasts and sorrows and rejoices in common, and roams where his legs carry and there is game for his gun. When there is abundance he smokes his pipe in happy indolence and his wife does the work; when there is no meat for the kettle, he shoulders his gun and goes out into the woods, leaving care and hunger at home with the squaw. But he by no means invariably escapes hunger. It is ever a feast or a famine with him, and it might always be a feast were he not so improvident and lazy. Cloth- ing and food are at his very door. In the rivers and lakes there is fish in great quantity and variety; along their banks fisher, otter, mink, beaver and musk-rat; and in the forests moose, caribou, bear, lynx, fox, wolf, woiver- ine, marten, ermine and rabbits—to say nothing of the early spring and aut- umn migration of ducks and geese, the packs of ptarmigan, which in their changing plumage of brown and white are to be seen summer and winter, and the several other species of the grouse family that may be found the greater part of the year. Size of the Universe.

It has been estimated, says W. H. La- master in Popular Astronomy, that a cannon ball, moving with a velocity of 800 miles an hour, and leaving our earth and traveling in the direStion of the nearest fixed star, would not reach it in less than 4,500,000 years! and yet there are stars in the heavens and visible through telescopes that would require a cannon ball moving with the same velocity at least 500,600,- 000 years to reach them. It was said by the elder Herschell that it would require light traveling at the rate of 185,000 miles a second 2,000,000 years to come to the earth from the remotest luminous vapors within reach of his 40-foot telescope, and yet, whatever may have been the effort of astron- omers to bring the starry heavens as a whole into view even with the most powerful reflectors, they have so far proved to be futile. Hence, to the minds of men the universe must seem forever to be and to remain immeasur- able, incalculable and incomprehensi- ble. And while we may be able to weigh and measure suns and systems, within range of our telescopes, there are others so far away and s> far be- yond our powers of vision, and our power of calculation, that even our present supposed great knowledge of the sidereal neavens would dwindle into the thinnest of mental vapories.

Within the last ten years France has acquired of Equatorial Africa about 300,000 square miles, in which

there are now 300 Europeans; Germany, 100,000 square miles; Italy, 547,000 square miles, and Portugal has now a defined territory extending over 710,000 square miles. France, moreover, has been ac- tive farther north, in the Sahara and in West Africa, and claims rights over 1,600,000 square miles; while Ger- many, in Southwest Africa and the Cameroons, asserts her rule over 540,- 900 square miles.—Henry M. Although Roentgen’s work was 80 thoroughly done that little has been added to it by other experimenters, his view that the X rays difler from the cathode rays ig not accepted by all physicists. Delbear believes that the same results could be ob- tained from any source of light. He has given some attention to the matter, having, as long ago as 1892, photographed an iron star through an ordinary table-top by means of electric sparks. He stated two years ago that all rays have similarcharac teristic properties, that what any ray can do depends upon the kind cf matter it falls on, that what we know as light has no ex- istence apart from the eves, and that it has long been known that ether waves too long to be seen by the eyes could be made to produce photographs. The interesting fact may be added that M. Gustave Le Bon has reported to the French Academy of Sciences photographs obtained through plates uf iron and lead by a three hours’ exposure to the light of a paraffin lamp.
