SUPREME COURT.

Tits Trinity Term sittings of the Court commenced yesterday. Duncan McLean. Esq., of New London, was sworn Foreman of the Grand Jury.

Big Lordship the Chief Justice, stated, that it aﬁorded great pleasure to the Court, to be enabled to inform them, that the Calender for this Term, though presentin butaslightdi- minution in the number of 0 shoes for their consideration as compared with several of the last consecutive Terms for this County, con- tains but one case of aggravated character, vis., assault, with intent to commit a rape, and is made up otherwise of two cases of com- mon assault; a case of assault upon the Un- der Sherilfof the County, in the execution of the duties of his ollice, and ﬁve cases of larce- nies of property triﬂing in amount. The cases of Larcen require no particular observation from the ourt; they are all of the ordinary description of thefts of articles oftrilling value, and in their investigation, you will apply to them those neral rules of Law which govern the crime ofglerarcenymnd which are brieﬂy sum- med up in these requieites,viz., that there must he a taking and carrying away of the property with intent to convert it to the takers own use without the consent of the owner, and that the intent must be felonious, and such intent must exist at the time of taking, and that the

rty in possession of the stolen articles is deemed to have come by it feloniously, unless he prove to the contrary. .

In cases ofassault and battery, it may be suﬁicient to state, that no language or gesture, however aggravating, justiﬁes an assault in point of w. Two of the cases for your _con- sideration would appear from the Depositions, to have been sent up to this Court by_ the City Court, in consequence of their re rding_ them as cases of rather an aggravate description, and committed under circumstances calling foraheavier punishment than that Court is authorised to indict.

OTICE is hereby given, that in pursuance of Resolutions passed this day by the Committee of Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping, the following Regulations will come into operation on and after the [st July. 1851, viz.-—

“ Slii s which proceed to sea without being [as- lenerl with the Iron Knees and Riders prescribed by the Ruler, will have one year deducted from the

“Ships built in the British North American Co- lonies, and all Shi s the frames of which are com- posed of Fir, of 600 tons to 1000 ions. and all Ships (wherever built) the length of which from the stem to the stern-post alell shall exceed liis times their extreme breadth, shall have diagonal iron plules filled outside or inside the frame, to extend from the upper deck clamp to the first fooihooks, and be not less than four inches broad. and | inches thick, and be bolted with i inch bolts through each frame if lilted en the outside, and through each timber iftitted on the inside of the frame: the number of the plates to be in the proportion of not less than one pair to every twelve feet of the ship‘: entire length. And in all such ships of I000 ions and upwards, the iron plates to be not less than ﬁve inches broad and three- fourili inches thick, bolted as above wirh one inch

The foot-note in 'l‘sble B, allowing the use of " thinner plank for short hoods," has been amended and will stand as follows, viz:—“All the fore and after hoods, both outside and inside, may be reduced one-sislh in thickness. Purrens are not allowed in this or in any other part of a ship.

The words “ Paul Bills" will in future be omitted in the Table A; but it will be the duty of the Sur- ve ore to see that the Paul Bills are properly secured.
