out her arm across the continent of Asia, uutil now she is establishing ports in the Japan and Chinese seas. She has taken possession of au enormous territory to the eastward ; and for a century or more has been gradually pushing south and southeast, conquering tribes and people. Time and again her hosts have been beaten back, baffled ; but only to return with greater fury, not deterred by the!

loss of time, or meaus, or men, from the one grand object in view—to

possess all the territory aud ports south aud between Russia proper, the Medi- terravean, the Bosphorus avd Darda- velles. Oosce established there, she becomes, as we have already stated, the dominant power of the world.

Britain, tor many reasons, must op- pose Russia's further advance, /france, Prussia, Austria and Italy must eventu- ally oppose witb all their means and energies, the copsummation of Russia’s desires. At present, with the exception of Italy, all these powers seem determined to leave the burthen of opposition to Russia on Britain’s should- ers ; aud at the same time, in a mean and cowardly manner, throw more or less obstructions in her way. The day is not far distant when they must all put their shoulders to the wheel, or the great Juggervaut, the Collossus of the North, will roll over and crash them to powder. Austria particularly, is, in danger, and shows signs of preparations for resisting Russia; and, if all signs do not fail, the Prussians will soou also follow. While the crowned heads are hob-ncbbing, fearing the outcome of Socialistic and Nihilistic movements, the civilians and officers and soldiers, aud the press of Raseia, Prussia, and Austria, are all outspoken. It is obvious that the Prussians and Austrians view Russia’s progress with distrust aud alarm, and the Russians seem aware of the fact. There appears to be no love lost between the great partitioners of Poland; and Aus- tria, and even Prussia, begins to feel that their great Northern neighbor may treat them some day as they treated Poland.

It seems to be evident to the whole world that the present peaceful dispesi- tion of Russia is only a temporary mat- ter. She is pushing a trans-caspian railway to completion; and when that is in operation, her means for the transpor- tation of troops and munpitiops will be adequately increased, and she will then seize the favorable opportunity to prose- cute her ambitious aims. Close observ ers express the opinion that a war be- tween Britain and Russia is inevitable in the vear future. These two great nations will contend for supremacy in the East. Knogland does not court heos- tilities ; but her people are prepared to teach Russia that Britain's rights, and the rights of humanity, must be respect- ed. slivsaieilaliinoen hie als

—A Parsee gentlemon, who writes from Malabar Hill, Bombay, a letter to the Jimes of the 15th ult., denounces in strong terms the statements that have appeared inthe Russian press reflecting on the loyalty to England of the natives of India. In conclusion, he says: “ This letter has run to greater length than { first intended. I will, therefore, briefly conclude by prominently mention- ing the fact (Hat not one of the great races inhabiting the peninsula will wel- come the Russians to India. It is the instinet of self-interest which requires to keep them as distant as possible from the boundaries of India. The mild Hindoos would not bear the face of the ferocious Russian. The Mahomedans have a hereditary and natural hatred of Russia, Owing to its constant attack on Turkey. My own people, the Persees, have everything to gain or lose in com- mon with the English, and all these,with the various races living in this country, wouid, when the hour of danger arrived

Mr. Bain proposes a threefold division of the rocks of the Island into Permo-carboni ferous, Permian and Triassic.

speaking, prove to be a con- servatve and patriotic measure. The idea is not new. The principle has worked successfully in the neigh- boring Republic, and there is no reason why it should not be successfu! here.

This very thing happened when Messrs. Mackenzie and Blake were in power in 1874. Five years after his first uprising, tiel came to Ottawa as a member elcct for Parliament. Messrs. Mackenzie and Blake did not know whether to admit him or not In this state of affairs, the Liberal-Con- servatives, under Mr. Bowell’s motion, veted toexpel him from the house. But instead of arresting Riel and trying him for shooting ‘‘ poor Scott,” Mr. Mackenzie moved that he be amnestied. And this was carried by the Grit majority.
