The Dominion Government is interest- ing itself in behalf of George Hatheway, a British subject, who, in 1882, was arrested at Big Horn City, Wyo., by United States authorities, as a deserter from the United States army. He had established himseif in Wyoming in business, and was doing well when arrested for a deserter named Heath and thrown into prisum, where he was subjected to all manner of indignities in order to wake him confess. All remen- strances and pleas of innocence were use less, and there he lay until the comumand- ing officer began to realize his mistake, and laliowed him to depart, only to find, how- ever, that his business was ruined sand himself 2 pauper. The attention of ihe United States authorities at Washington has repeatediy been called to the fact in an informal way without any reparation being made. it wil] now assume the character of an international question between the British and United tates governmeuts, and it is believed here with satisfactory resulis. Hatheway belongs to one of the oldest and must influential families in the province of New Brunswick.

Robbers Take the Town.

A reign of terror prevails in Aylmex, Ont., which for the past month has suffered throvgh several heavy robberies, perpe- trated by an organized gang who bid the authorities defiance. On Saturday the house of Mr. Gordon, a prominent lawyer, was entered and a cash box, which, for safe-keeping be had secreted in an empty stove, stolen. The box contained $400 in cash and $3,500 in promissory negotiable notes. Detectives have ubiaimed a clew to the guilty parties, one of whom is wanted in the United States fur regent forgeries, and for whose arrest iu the “United States a warrant has been issued. The man was seen in Aylmer a few nights ago, but on seeing a detective and a local constable en- tering the door of the room, he ran out of the rear door and escaped to the woods. He says no man in Aylmer will take him alive. He is one of a gang who last year were supposed tv have been connected with several heavy robberies in the Ottawa dis- trict, anda pal of Ardie, who shot and fatally wounded Constable Featters. A vigilance commiutiee is being formed.
