LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

Srr,—In your issue of Tuesday last Mr. Gardiner makes an attempt to deny the statements made by me in a former letter, which, to say the best of it, isa very weak effort. He admits giving some information respecting Barrister’s pedigree to the owners (or rather his co-partners, as he does not deny the ownership, or even allude to it), Mr. Gardiner charges me with accu- sing him of writing the following rule : ** Aby horse foaled during 1880, or prior to 1881, can be admitted if its sire or its dam

ticn.” This I deny. I gave the ubove rule, showing that Mr. Gardiner had quoted a rule which was not correct. Mr. Gardi- ner thinks it very easy fora horse tu gain admittance to the Shire Horse Stud Book if foaled prior to 1881. How is it the celebrated Barrister could not do so? Per- haps for the benefit of the public Mr. Gar- diner will explain. Mr, Gardiner mentions three Shire horses that are registered in the Shire Horse Stud Book, all of wh'ch are by pure-bred sires, so that the rule quoted by Mr. Gardiner in Barrister’s advertisement is not correct, as the only qualification in that rule is that the sire or dam must be by a registered horse. As | understand Mr. Gardiner’s letter, he trys to make out that across between the Clydes and the Shires is superior to either of those breeds, and

At the Royal Show at Liverpool, the champion prizes for the best stallion and mare were won by the Shires, although some of the best Clydes- dales from Scotland were exhibited, and I have no doubt some of the Barrister breed. The above are the class of horses Mr. Gardiner thinks inferior to the cross between the Clydes and the Shires, and says that Barriater’s owners would not like to see him connected with horses mentioned in the Shire Horse Stud Book, although | find on looking at his advertisement card that he claims kin with ten of these inferior Shires.
