St. Jonn’s, Nfld. Sept, 16.—A violent hurricane swept this section of Newfound~ land last night. The Allen liner Corean, from Philadelphia, Pa., hada frightful passage andthe Silvia from New York was delayed 24 hours.

Four fishing boats were driven off St.

John’s coast and three men and a woman

drowned. Ajwidespread ,destruction of fish- ing premises and gear ie reported, and it is feareu that there is much damage and probab'y loss of life at more distaut ports.

Arctic Exploration.

Sypney, Cape Breton, Sept. 15.—The Peary Arctic Club’s chartered steamer Diava arrived bere today from Etab, North Greenland, Aug 28ih, with all well oo board. Lientenant Peary and his two companions, with native allies, were Jeft in excelleat health and « »irits, comfortably heused for the winter, with provisions for two years, and an ample supply of dog food, 111 walrus having been killed since Aug 2nd for that purpose.

Peary will remain at Etab until Febru ary, when, with a sporting party of natives, he wiil goto Fort Coager, and thence be- gin his journey tothe Pole, either by the Greenland coast or trom Cape Hella, as conditions may determine.

Archbishop Ireland's Opinion.

Sr. Pavt, Minv., Sept 15.—Archbishop Ireland, asked for his opinion on the meet» ing to protest against the verdict of the court martial, said :—It is my belief tbat public meetings in America such as it is prom» posed to hold for the pur pose of protesting against the sentence of the Rennes court martial are untimely, unfair to France, and likely to breed regrettable ill feeling between that country and our own. I shall not deny that I have always had ia my heart deep sympathy for the unfor- tunate officer who has been under trial in Rennes, and that I had wished and hoped that the sentence of the court would have been one of acquittal. But it is another question to face the verdict of the court, the moment that verdict has been declared, with the assertion that it is plainly against truth, and that the court from which it issues is guilty of base injustice and sacrilegious per- jury. And it is still more so another question to lay on france the crime of the verdict, if crimethere be in it, and throw ata whole people andtheir Government insulting epithete. Let us wait. This whole matter belongs to the internal life and to the internal administration of France, and international courtesy as well as justice bid us talk about i; very care- fully and very slowly. France is a proud, seasitive nation. She will deeply resent, as it is her right, undue criticism and hasty judgement of her acts by a foreign people, and especially will she resent, as

Vanderbilts Great Wealth.

New York, Sept 15,— While it is gener- ally known that Mr. Vanderbilt was an enormously rich man, yet little is known of his actual fortune. He wasa most reticent ran about bis private affsire. His fortune has been variously estimated at all the wey from $80,000,000 to $200,000,000. Is was mostly in railroad stock, bonds, and securities. One who was close in the confidence of Mr. Vanderbilt said it would be folly for anyone to try to make a correct valuation of the estate, but that it might be roughly estimated from $125,000,000 to $140,000,000; even this was sheer surmise. Mr. Vanderbilt’s holdings were not specu- lative in any sense of the word, and so his death had no perceptible effect on Wall street. When he suffered the first stroke of paralysirs, his affairs were placed in such shape that if he should die the fortune would be intact and vo confusion result,

JouaNnNesBurG, Sept 16—-Thke Kastern Star, of Johannesburg, asserts thet martial law proclamation is beiag printed; and it is reported here that the reply of the Transvaal government to the British note will suggest a seven years franchise.

Lonpon, Sept 16.—In the forecast of Kruger’s reply, there is undoubtedly a large basis of truth which seems to brivg the dispute within measurable distance of war.

This evening the press association issued a curious statement to the efiect that as econ a8 the garrison of Natal had Sbeen sufficiently strengthened the Transvaal Government would be called upon tocom- plete a new convention already drafted which, while guaranteeing the integrity of the Transvaal State, provides for the demolition of the forts and limits; the armed force of the Tranrvaal toa number deemed sufficient to iosintain interval order.

According to the press association, the convention wiildemand the diplomatic agencies be suppressed and the judiciary be made independent of the executive.

This sentiment which realizes extreme demands of Uitlanders must be aceepted under reserve at the present stage, but it is notunlikely to be a semi~ofticial bint as to the next move of the Government should President Kruger prove obdurate.
