JOHN AND HALIFAX.

Tue people of Canada are all more or less interested in the development af St. Jobn and Halifax. In this part of Canada we heartily desire to see both cities advance in population, importance, and prosperity. For this reason, all were glad when the late Government announced that the Atlantic mail subsidies on bebalf of Canada would no longer be paid on account o¢ vessels going to Portland or eleewhere abroad and when it was declared that the present Government would adopt this policy. But it is to be regretted that the present Government bave, iu carrving out this policy, given another example of their proficiency in the art of How Not to Do It. Thearrangerrent they have made involves an unnecessarily large outlay, affords an indirect service, cvsts about twice as muchas it ought toco-t, and does not satisfy either Halifax or St. Jonn- The people of Halifax are dirsatiefied becaase their town is given a secondary place—made merely a port of call to take on board passengers and mails; aod the people of St. John are dissatisfied because the veasels leaving there will be delayed and hampered by reason of the necessity of going to Halifax. To secure this dout.ly uneatisfactory result the Govern- ment have agreed to pay $140,000 a vear fora weekly service. Under the old arrangement-—n ade by those “extravagant tories "—St. John was given a fortnightly service at a cost to the country of $20,000 a year. It is, therefore, not unreasonable to conclude that they could have obtained a weekly service giving St. John perfect eatisfaction for double this amount. In so far as St. John is eoncerned, the country would thus be saved $100,000 a year. Ifa direct weekly service to St. John could have been obtained for a subsidy of $40,000 a year, a direct service to Halifax could have been obtained for that amount or Jessa, and Halifax would thus have been satisfied, But ,as the matter stands’ the Government have thrown away $60,000 a year—which comes out of the pockets of the taxpayers at large and failed to give either Halifax or St. Jonn that which tney need to promote tLeir development as the winter purts of all Canada. It is not wonderful that the costly incompetence cf the Government is generally condemned.

—There must be plenty of money in Victoria now if the following item from the New Glasgow Enterprise ia correct: “The British warship lmperieuse has arrived in Victoria. B, C., with $15,000,- 000 of buried treasure unearthed at Cocos Island.”

—The Department of Agriculture is sending out thousands of copies of a bulletin prepared by Professor Robertson, on the dressing, packing and shipping of poultry for the British markets. The information gleaned from tue various sources is the result of years of experi- ence of poultry handlers isthe mother country, whom Professor Robertson met during the past summer.

St. John Telegraph: We sre glad to welcome the Allao-Line to St. John. One winter’s experieuce of this port will teach macy things in regerd to which they have been heretofore very ill-informed. They will learn that their ships will not have to lie aground at low water, as one of their proprietora stated a few years ago. They will discover that St. Joho isthe safest port in all America, and the easiest to enter, and that nothing can prevent it from becoming the great winter port of Canada.

The output of bullion, matte and ore from the Slocan and Trail districts of British Columbia so far this year amounte to 45,518 tonsa valued at $6,707,282. These are indeed gratifying figurers, and indicate what may be expected in the near future from the Klondike.

In his inaugural] lecture in the chair of geology at Oxford, Prof. Sollas caused much amusement the other day by one of his illustrations of the theory of evolution. Fi st, he said, came the hobby-horse, which gradually developed into the bonesheker.
