Tuey Bottep.—On Saturday afternoon, az McEwen and White were being removed to the jail from the Supreme Court, they boited from the constables and ran about half « block before being re- captured. The two were hand-cuffed together, and White was not as fleet-footed as McEwen. Had McEwen been alone the capture would probably not. nave been 80 easily made. The attempted escape created considerable excitement in the vicinity of the jail.

Cricket and Baseball at the Park— Picnics Postponed.

ee Tue rain yesterday forenoon put a

damper to the festivities of the day, and interfered with the carrying out of many a

caretully-laid plan. But it was of great benefit to the growing crops. In _ conse-

quence of the rain the tea at Bedford wae postponed until today. For the same reason the Baptist Sunday School picnic was postponed until Wednesday,and the tea at Crapaud was postponed until Saturday. The tea at Winsloe came off however, and was very successtul, When the weather many drove out, and there was a large contin- gent .y the special train.

Tike races on the Summerside Driving Park were the attraction of the day at that place. The track was in very good condi- tion notwithstanding the rain of the fore- noon, aod there was a large attendance of spectators. There were about one hun- dred present from Charlottetown.

The judges were T, B. Grady, (starter) H. B. McKay and W. 8. McKie.

The 230 class was first called, Park- laud, Lady Hilda, Onward and Gracie

The Bicyele Races,

The bicycle races were sandwiched — in between the heats of the horse races, the first being the three mile race for the championship of the Province and a silver cup oftered by Godxin Bros, Sum- merside. There were only two starters, F. H. Cannon, St. Eleanors, and B. C’. Prowse of Charlottetown. Just before the race was called Mr. Prowse had ihe misfortune to injure the rear tire of his wheel, which

prevented its further use, and he was obliged to ride a wheel on which he never sat before and with the management of which he was upacqu sin ted. At the start Can- non led and set a slow pace, with

Prowse at his wheel. This order was maintsined for the greater part ofthe race. Towards the close of the last lap, however, each put on a splendid epurt, and Cannon passed under the wire thé winner by about six yards in 9.47.

There were four starters in the mile race, F. H. Cannon, St. Eleanor’s, B. C. Prowse, Charlottetown, A. D. Caldwell, Summerside, and A, KE. Arsenault, Char- lottetown. Caldwell led at the start, fol- lowed by Cannon, Prowse and Arsenault, in the order named. There was no change in this position at the half. After passing the half Cannon captured first place, and Prowse soon dropped into second. At the three-quarters Prowse made a graud effort to take first place from Cannon, and suc- ceeded in doing 980, retaining that position down the home stretch. Passing under the wire, it seemed to the majority of the spectators,. that Prowse was a winner by a few inches; but the jodges, a few minutes later, gave their

For the half mile race there were three conteatants, Lorne Unsworth an! Edwart Cook, of Charlottetuwn, and Uarry Grady and Cree! McArthur, of Summerside. Unsworth won in 1.15, with McArthur a good second, Grady third and Cook fourth. Unsworth rode a Stearns racer, weighing fifteen pounds. Cannon rode a Brantford.

There was a stiff breeze from the north- east throughout the race, which was not conducive to fast time.

The proceedings throughout were order- ly and well conducted.

Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Beer left on Sat- urday for Halifax, en route to England and the Continent. They will be away from home about two months.

Dr. Conroy went to Halifax this morn- ing to attend a meeting of the Maritime Medica! Association to be held in that city on Wednesday and Thursday next.

Mr. William H. McLeod, dealer in shoe machinery needles, Summer Street, Bos- ton, is at the Queen Hotel. Mr. McLeod is a native of this Province. This ie his first visit home in twenty-eight years.

Mr. Alexander Devine, editor of the In- dependent, a daily paper published at An- aconda, Montana, is visiting his father-in- law, J. W. Morrison, Esq., of this city. Mr. Devine is well and favorably known in Charlottetown, he having been for several years an official of the P. E. I. Railway,

Duncan Munn, Esq.. formerly of Little Sands, but now a resident of Newwest- minster, B. C., arrived here on the 29th ult., an will spend the summer months with his friends on theIsland. Mr. Munn speaks favorably of Pacific Coast Island- ers. They are all in the front rank in industry and prosperity.
