She winced at the ha piness that lit his face. But before he could speak she disillusioned him, her voice catching.

“But I'm married -— Batch, and as long as Doug wants me to re- main his wife, 1 will. For his father's sake."

“You're too human, Charity. You need love. You can't go through life tied to a man who compels you to live alone. 0h, Charlty—I want your love so."

Her blood sang before the passion in his voice. She was wanted. Life could be so sweet if shc could throw of! the shackles Doug had placed on her. Divorce him to marry Bath. Her heart cried out against the em- pilness of her life. She had so much love to give. But she shook her head sadly.
