The hunter man alone preserved his poll. instincts. My followers were hungry. Rifles were levelled—and the bear and one of the antelopes fell victims to the deadly gim.

Both were soon stripped of their skins, and butchered. A fire was kindled in the glade, and upen sword-blades and saplivg spits the choice morsels of venison and ‘bear meat” were roasted, and eaten, with many a jest about the “smoky kitcheu.”

I was myself hungered. I shared the repast, but not the merriment. At that moment, no wit could have won from me asmile; the most !vxurious table could not have furnished me with cheer.

Some chewed their leaden bullets, or pebbles of chalcedony which they had picked up; others had gained relief by drivking the blood of the slaughtered animals—the bear and the aniclope— but we found-a better source of assuage- ment in the succulent stems of the cac- tus and agave.

The relief was but temporary: the juice cooled our lips aud tongues, but there is an acrid principle in these plants that soon acted, and our thirst became more intevse than ever.

Some talked of returning on the trail in search of water—of goiog back even to the stream—more than twenty miles distant.

Under such circumstances, even mili- tary command loses its authority. Nature is stronger thao martial law.

I cared vot if they did return ; I cared not who left me, so long as the trappers remained true. I had vo fear that they would forsake me, and my disapprobatiou of it checked the cheerless proposal, and once more all declared their willingoess to go on.

Fortunately, at that crisis the smoke began to clear away, and the atmosphere to lighten up. The fire had burnt on to the edge of the chaparral, where it was now opposed by the sap-bearing trees. The grass had beea all consumed—the conflagration was at an end.

Mounting our horses, we rode out from the glade ; and following the trail a few handred yards further, we emerged from the thicket, and stood upon the edge of the desolated plain. '

S., Gas Examiner to the City of Glasgow, in « lecture delivered by him, calculated that £130,000 ($650,000) m year, are thrown away in Gias gow by the use of imperfect fittings. The Report of the Committee of the British Association of Science to enquire as to the best means for the developmen: of light from Coal Gas of different qualities—~cemprising Dr. William Wallace, Professor Dittmar, and Mr. Thomas Wills, F. C.S., F. I, C, E., showed that Bray’s Burner's yielded the greatest amount of light of all the two or three score of Burners reported upon, which iucluded ail the Burners of repute in the market,

In a pamphlet upon Lizht sud Heat, pub- lished by RK. B. Taber, A. M., be says: “ The cost of Gas as compared with other illumin- ants is much more economical when rightly used, than many suppose. From experiments made for this purpose, the following results have been obtained. They were made by burning samples ot Devoe’s Brilliant Oil and ordinary Oils, and testing their illuminating power. It was found that Coal Gas costing one cent at $3 per thousand fect, gave a light equal to 18 candles, while Devoe’s Brilliant Oil consuming 27.4 grammes cost- ing halfa cent, gave a light equal to 9 candles.

“A good Argand or Johnson's Burner, the Burner's used in the last experiment, will therefore give the light of 2 ordinary Oil Burners in direct comparison, at no greater expense in the cas: of the finer and safer grades of Oil, Lights, however, on the author- ity of Scientists, are not to be compared in direct proportion, but in proportion to the squares of their powers, and such a com- parison with the case of the use of Gas, its cleanliness, freedom from odor and dangers, renders its use desirable wherever it can be introduced,”
