Got Into the Habit Long Ago and Can't Shake It Off,

“Y often amuse myself,’’ said a philolo- gist, ‘by trying to ascertain how many words I can make out of the letters of any word that I may happen to think of and may use for experiment. Take, for exam- ple, a short word, such as ‘rat,’ and you will at once notice that the letters of it give art, at, tar, and, if you like, tartar. There came to my mind last night the long word ‘comprehensive,’ and I suppose that nearly 100 other words can be formed from the 18 letters contained in it. The various words took shape very rapidly in my mind, and I seized a pen to jot them down. Here is the sheet of paper. As you run through them I would like you to keep in your mind’s eye the word ‘comprehensive,’ from which all of them are drawn:

‘“‘Any one can carry on the experiment with this fertile word ‘comprehensive’ as much farther as he pleases. It is no better word for the purpose than 1,000 other words in the English language.

“I got into the habit of practicing with words in this way. when I was a boy, and I can’t get out of it. It often helps to put me to sleep at night, and it sometimes takes up my mind when I am walking in the street or dining at my elub or holding a conversation. It is a bothersome habit.

A Punishment That No Man Need Fear In Gotham’s Police Courts.

If any respectable person should happen to get into the hands of the police and be fined by a city magistrate, when he had no money and didn’t want to make known his plight to friends, he might be benefit- ed by knowing that some threatened terms of imprisonment are not so awful as they seem to be. This is due to the fact that the day of commitment and the day of dis- charge always count in law as full days, and that it is the custom not to put a per- son to serving out a sentence until the end of the day of commitment and to release him on the morning of the day of dis- charge.

A curious instance of how this worke was witnessed the other day at the Charles Street police station. A reporter had gone there upon scme news errand, and while he talked to the sergeant at the desk he noticed that the main room was nearly fill- ed with push carts.

‘‘We have had to makearaid upona lot of poor fellows,’’ explained the eser- geant.

Just then a policeman came in with two venders and reported at the desk.

“They were all fined $1 each or one day,’’ he said, referring to the batch of push cart men that he had taken to court. ‘‘These two men pzeid their fines gnd have come back with mé to get their carts.”’

‘“‘All right,’’ said the sergeant. ‘‘Get some men from the back room and help them out with the carts.’’

While the carts were got out the sergeant glanced up at the clock.

‘*Tt’s after 4,’’ he said. ‘‘All the rest of them will be here in a minute or two. You'd better stay and be ready to help them out with the rest of the carts.’’

“You see,’’ continued the sergeant to the reporter, ‘‘these two men who paid their fines have saved only a few minutes, and if they had not been greenhorns they would have kept their money. The others, I guess, have been there before. The offi- cial day in court ends at 4 o’clock, when the court adjourns, and all the prisoners who have been fined $1 or committed for one day are released. It’s time for the oth- ers to be here now.”’

Sure enough, as he spoke they came trooping in.. They were smiling, and they glanced with quizzical looks at the men who had paid their fines and were going down the street.—New York Sun.

The use of anwsthetics in surgical opcra- tions has made this a new world. The re- cent commemoration of the employment of ethcr to deaden jin inevitable to sur- gery cinphasized this fact anew. But what heroism, now seen to be unnecessary, was displayed when patients had to face the terrors of operations! Almost two cen- turies and a half agoan Englishinan, visit- ing Paris, saw an operation involving a risk to life performed on a child only 8 or 9 years old. She *‘underwent the operation with most extraordinary patience’’ and ex- pressed ‘‘great joy’’ when she saw it was over. We can well understand the joy, but the patience seems al.nost incredible to a generation which escapes so much pain through the imimeasuriible mercy of dis- coverics that banish suffering.—Youth’e Companion.

How Money Grows,

How money accumulates in a generation is shown by the increase of the fund eof $550,000 left in 1877 by Allen C. Lewis of Chicago to found a free technical college in that city. His will provided that the money should be invested until it reached an amount that would insure a good build- ing and the support of the college.
