A MonTrREAt despatch says: ‘‘A feeling of confidence is taking place in financial circles since the new Tarilf was promulgated, and the stock market is feeling its beneficial effect. Bank and telegraph stocks are steadily advan- cing, and altogether tlere is a much more healthy tone prevailing.

Tue North Sydney (C. B.) Herald says :— ** DeWitt Talmage says ‘ the newspaper is the grand agency by which the gospel is to be preached, ignorance cast out, oppression de- throned, crime extirpated, the world raised, heaven rejoiced and God glorified.”” And naively adds: ‘‘The North Sydney Herald is only $1.50 per year in advance.”’

Dr. Ortox, Mr. John White, and Mr. Josiah B. Plumb are three Liberal-Conser- vatives whom the Grits have vainly endeav- ored to keep out of Parliament. The two for- mer have already taken their oaths and seats, and Mr. Plumb will quickly follow them. Mr. Plumb will be sure of an exceptionally warm ovation on re-entering the House. —London Pree Press.

(small), 6 to 8 cts.; pre 40 to 50 cts.; chickens, 45 to 60 cts.; utter, 20 to 23 cts.; do tub, from 4 to 6 cts; eggs, 12 to 16 cts.; potatoes, 34 to 38 cts.; hay, from 35 to 40 cts.

AT the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court yes- terday forenoon, John Walsh, who took a horse and sleigh from a boy named Alex. Mc Donald and drove recklessly about the city, was fined $2 and costs or 10 days hard labor. John Ring, drunk and loafing about the street, was committed to jail for eight days. Thomas Donovan was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for vagrancy, to be exacted on the next offence.

Tus Advertiser says that Mr. J. M. Stew- art, of Georgetown, has commenced operations on the Wood Islands Breakwater, he havinga contract to construct the same. The timber required is all in readiness, and as soon as the ice breaks up its erection will be pushed for- ward rapidly. The contractor intends em- ploying about fifteen men, and calculates upon having the work completed about the first of July next.

Manrrozpa.—We learn that Rev. Geo. Rod- dick intends leaving Pictou county for Mani- toba early in April, and will be accompanied there by some eighty persons who propose settling in the prairie province. While we wish the Revd. gentleman and his fellow- emigrants God-speed, we have to regret the loss of 30 many good men from our midst. A large number from this county propose leav- ing for other places the coming spring, the greater number however to remain under the old flag, in one of the Westera Canadian Prov- inces. — Pictou Standard.

The Dismissals |

Special Despatch to Examiner. Orrawa, March, 20.

Vo-day Mr. Huntington moved for papers relating to the dismissal of Mr. Cardwell, an employee of the Inland Reveaue Deptarment.

Mr, Brecken spoke to the motion, and cre- ated a great stir in the House. He said the most violent opponents to the Government in Prince Edward Island were Dominion officials. Such a state of things called for an immediate remedy. He thought the Government had

been too lenient with these parties. Men who so abused their positions ought to be replaced

by others. He thought when Civil Service

officials stumped the country, making violent charges agaiust political opponents, such offi- cials should be immediately dismissed.

Dr. Muttart, P. E. I., said he had been fol- lowed from meeting to meeting by officials,and had been subjected to their rowdyism. He hoped examples would be made.

Mr. Yeo defended Island officials from the charges of partizanship. One of them spoke at a meeting and had resigned to run for the Legislature.

Hon. J. C. Pope said hundreds had been in- discriminately dismissed by the late Govern- ment. He read papers coneerning the dismis. sal of a lighthouse keeper to show that there was no cause. :

Messrs. Casey and Huntington, both Oppo- sition members, admitted that when employees of the Government took active part in the elec- tions they should be dismissed.

The debate is to be continued.

The other Island members will speak.

To-day they waited on the Government. Some dismissals will take place soon, and the appointments will go into effect on the first day of May.

Orrawa, March 20.

A deputation of cigar makers from Montreal waited on the Finance Minister to-day, and asked that a spefied duty of 25 cents per pound and an ad valorem of 20 per cent. be imposed on imported cigars.

The debate on the dismissal of Regis Card- nal was resumed to-day by Mr. Vallee, who spoke of official interference in his county at the late elections. It led to a lively discus- sion.

Lonvon, March 20.

The Times’ leading editorial says the late election in Canada was a manifestation of the popular will, and the popular will must be obeyed. It must rule in Canada, and we have long since abandoned all power to interfere with its supremacy there. ‘This is practically the answer that Sir Michael Hicks Beach, Colonial Secretary, will make to Mr. Bright. This tariff has been demanded by the Canadian people. We cannot approve of it. We may and must think it unwise. We are thorough- ly convinced that it will disappoint the inhab- itants of Canada in proving an injury instead of a benefit to them.

Perhaps it is true that the usual instruction was omitted, requiring Lord Lorne to reserve for Her Majesty's approval all bills imposing differential duties. Whatever may be the truth about it, we must remember that the differential duties now proposed, differ from those to which instruction has been generally | understood to refer. ‘he tariff that has been produced in obedience to the call of the gen- eral election is as unwise as it can be. There is no branch of indastry which will not be crippled by it.”

The operatives and weavers were not repre- sented at the meeting of mill masters in Man- chester, to-day, in consequence of a disagree- ment with regard to Union Secretarics. Rep- resentatives of other branches of the trade throughout the north and northeast of Lan- cashire have pledged their word that the operatives will not resist a five per cent. re- duction,
