The documents on which tho belief in Dr. Idvingslonc‘s safety is based are a lctte from Dr. Kirk. II. M. Vice-Consul, rc- ccivcd on tho ltith of November. and dated Zaiiibar Sept. 23. H567. n letterol the same dim! from the Consul. Mr. Churchill. and it statement by a nu vo oi the interior ol Africa. The Alricaa s statement is similar to some of the others. Mr. Churchill‘s let- ter to Lord Stanley deserves to be quoted at. lougtlu—It is as follows :—

The rea- sons for concluding that he must be Dr. Livingstone are contained in the following extracts from Dr. Kirk‘s letter :—

" The story of a white man having been at Uruwa, to the west of the lake. is a dis- tinct thingirom the more definite iia ative we now have. But the one adds eonliiu motion to the other, and shows us that ii it be Livingstone on whose track we now are, that he haslniorc than half finished his work. and is about to go to the Albert Nynnza. I may mention that there is no doubt that tho wliito man of whom i wrote lorincrl long ago as having been s.-.en on one oft o 1: cs by an Arab who remained on the coast was a 'I‘ui'k. one ofthe traders from Gondokora who have been met with in Urfianda by Zanibar merchants. the description fully satisfied mo of' this. and nothing is more probable. Thus the tra- ders of Egypt and Zinibar have now met in the interior of Africa! Spckc‘s route has been quickly followed. How far this has been for the immediate benefit of Al‘— rica others inayjudge. In the end Africa will be overrun with traders in all (lIiLC- ions. and then the vast resources of this continent will be shown.

“ Since writing the above I have again seen my informant, and placed before him my books of photographic portraits. These extracts certainly nxcltc a strong hope that Dr.Liringsinne may still be safe. At the meeting of tho Itoyal Society at which these extracts were read r lioder— ick Murchison stated that Mr. Price of the Bombay Mission concurred in his views. and he believed that the six persons. re- ported as seen with the white man, are the Christian youths who iu-cuiupauicd him. Sir Itodcrick is further thus report. ed ;—-

Siv’Rodcriek Murchison then said that he had received a letter from Sir Samuel llakcr, who, they would recollect. lllitl been opposed to the opinion which he had entertained respecting,r the fate of their cs- tceniod lriend. and that even as late as thoirlnmdoc meeting. Upon receipt of this information he had at lei rtli changed his mind. In this letter he . id how do- sirable it would be if the I vptian Govern- ment could be induced to ‘or an expe- dition from their end of Lake Tangauika. In that case he believed that Dr. Living- stone would be met by tho exploring party. That. he added, would be a glorious tin dot-taking. and‘ho would be vei- ' glad to’ join in it. as his present inactivity was worse to him than an African lever.

Upon the invitation of the President a discussion followed, but it did notlast Very long. It was joined in by Captain Shei rd Osborne. Captain Kemiclly. Mr. Waller. who had been with Dr. Livinvsione in one of his expeditions. and Mi. Crawford.
