A Famous Cow Deiw.—All breeders of Jersey stock lument the death of the famous cow, Jersey Belle, of Scituate, raised by Mr. Charles’ B. Eillms, at his Scituate farm. Her pedigree is unstained by eross-mixture of blood, and her record as a milk producer is unequsiled, During five months in 1877, ‘here was churned a weekly average of 19 pounds of butter from her milk; two days of September of that year her yield was three pounds and 14}

I very much regret that a verbatim report of the speeches could not be obtaived.. The | Minister of Customs expressed himseif highly pleased with the reception given him. «He referred to the increase of re- venue everywhere visi>dle throughout the Dominion es a result of the National Policy; aud said that althouyh the benefits accruing frow this so-called policy might not be so generally felt bere as in the more we.tern portion of the country yet, it was gratifying to kaow that trade was increas ing. He considered the Island capable of taking advantage of the protection this policy afforded. The people here are as smait and industrious as they are in other paris of Domizion ; and he gaw no. reason why capital could not be profitably employ- ed in the manufacture of Agricultaral Im- plements, and similar industries.

The President of the Counoil also made a brieff but pithy speech, in which he re- fered to his present visit to P. EK. Island as one of the most enjoyable and delightful he had ever made.

Afier the address and speeches were over, Mr. Archibald kindly extended the time for the train’s departure, and the party drove around the town and vicinity. At about half past ten the ‘‘ all aboard” was sounded, and the Ministeral party were again on the read buund for Georgetown. About fifteen or twenty of our townsmen went as far as Selkirk Station and returned on the noon-train. Veriras,

Millitia Inspection.

. Tue 82nd Battalion were inspected at Vietoria Park, yesterday afternoon, by Deputy Adjutant Taylor, and _ Brigade Major Freeland. ‘The force on the grounds comprised six companies, under Captains Longworth, Dogherty, McRae, Mabon, Spenee and Bearisto, and the Charlotte- town Engineers, under Major Dogherty Lient.-Col. Beer was in command, while Major Purdy acted as adjutant. The Battalion presented a fine appearance, and went through a variety of evolutions with cr2dit. Experienced officers on the growad were heard making the remark that they did “remarkably well;” and considering that it was the first time they drilled to- gether since the Island became confeder ated, we think the truth of this semark will be admitted by even the most hyper- critical.

The greatest enthusiasm prevailed The Blake-Huntington business acted as a wet blanket to the Grits here, and the Liberal-Conservatives are accordingly ex- ultant.

Mr. Jeremiah Travis, a leading lawyer,of St. John who, has abandoned the Grits, spoke at the committee meeting to-night, giving his reasons for leaving his party and

Mr. William McKerron, secretary of the Exhibition Committee, returned from P. ii. Island on Saturday, and reports that ho has ‘‘ set the whole thing gomg overthere’ ; the people are very enthuaiastie oyer the exhsbition, and manifest great interest in its sueecess. At least 2,000 visitors will attend from Charlottetown and vicinity, Ihe Island exhibits are made through a local advisory board, who reeeive the en- tiies, and if appreved on examination, the Local Government pay all the expenses connected with.the exhibit. Entries have already been mads by over, 200 exhibitors, inelnding the following:

The entries are being increased daily. Hon. Donald Ferguson, Provincial Secre- tary, takes a lively interest in the exhibi- tion, and is rendering eflicent services in securing a large show from the Island. In conversation with Mr. MeKerron, one Islander said he was going to exhibit be- cause he wanted to show that he could not only compete with, but excel, Upper Prov ince manufacturers, and he beleved that the general public understoad that fact they would prefer to buy at home, te sending thousands of miles up into Ontario fer their supplies. Another man said that he would be quite un

not exhibit, when the exhibition was held almost at hisown doors.. Besides, he wani- ed to show tue Dominion what the pro- ductions and manufactures of the Island were hke. According to returns before-Parliament the total population of the United King- dom of Great Britain and Ireland, includ- ing the Islands in British waters—that is to say, the Isie of Man andthe Channel Is

Merchant seamsn abroid, was on the night of the 4th of April, 35,246,562, consisting of 17,253,947 males,.and 17,992,615 fe- owles; the corresponding tetal in L871 was 31,845,379, giving an imevease of 4,147,236. To this number Scotland.c. ntributes 3,734,- 370, and Treland 5,159,839, the former hav- img increased by 374,352, and the latter

decreased by. 252,553, since 1871. The Isle of man _ contributes 53,592, and the Channel Island, 87,751. The

Army, Navy,and Merchant Seamen abroad, including 2,330 foreigners, contribuie 99,637, 22,507, and 120,700 respectively, and these tegecher, ameuat'to 242,844.

The population of England and Wales collectively was 25,968,286, showing a net increase on the numbers for 1871 of 3,256- 020. England along hag a population ef 24,608,391, an increase of 3,112,260. The density of the population of England and Wales is now 085 to the statute acre, of about 400 persous to the square mile. At the end of th: reign of Elizabeth it was in Eogland alone 43 to the square mile, and this was the exact number accorded in two counties—Wesimore’and, in England, and Brecknock in Wa'es—at the census of 1381. This sparsity of population js, no doubt, owing to the mountaineus character of those counties. At the last census Eagland and Wales together numbered 300 persons to the square mile; this gives a rise of 50 to the square mile, or 12.83 per cent. The areality of the population ef Kngland and Wales—that is the mean area of each per- son—which iu 1801 was 19,934 square yards, and in 1871 was 7,928 square yards, we find to be now 1,437 acres, or 6,055 square yards to each person,

Of the. English counties eight have fallen off in numbers—viz., Cambridge, by a litile more than a thousand; Cornwall, by so much as 32,859; Dorset, Hereford and Huntingdon show a decrease ef about four thousand each; Rutland and Westmoreland of alittle short of a thausand; whilst Shrop- shire remains almost stationary, having 118 inhabitants less than it supported ten years ago,

Of the progressive counties, Lancashire stands first, with an increase of 634,730; Yorkshire, as a whole, takes the second place, with an increase of 449,954; Middle- sex has increased by 379,049, and Sur- rey by 344.207, or very nearly as much as the West Riding of. Yorkshire. With an increase of: ever one hundred thousand there are five counties,viz., Durham, Kent, Stafford, Essex, and Warwick, in the order nated, the first claiming over one hundred and eighty thousand, and last one hundred and two thousand. Of the remaining counties, Buckingham, Devon, Norfolk, Oxford, Suffolk, Somerset and Wilts have an increase of legs than ten thousand; Buckingham beiig the most stationery, with scarcely four-hundred increase.

Wales, therefore, has a net increase of 142,- 760, with a population of 1,259,895, of which 677,023 are’ males and 682,867 females. The population ef Londen in 1871 was 3,254,260 ; it has now risen te to 3,814,571, including 1,794,106 males and 2,020,465 females, thus giving a net increase of 660,311. This is a litile less than the total pepulation of .
