Tse steamer Princess of Wales, which left this morning for Pictou, returned at 4 o’clock this evening. Captain Cameron reports that he encountered heavy tield ice at Wood Islaud’s. He attempted to force a passage through it but found it impossible to do se, The ice got heavier the further he went. The Princess of Wales had a large cargo, consist- ing in part of forty-four horses, She also had fifteen passengers.

Tue steamer Summerside which left this port for Pictou, yesterday morning, returned at four o'clock this evening. She met with heavy ice but got within sight of Pictou yesterday, and her passengers were taken off by the Northern Light, and reached Picton in time to connect with thetrain. She struggled in the ice until to-day and finding it impossible to reach Picton returned here. She had a

Rescue of the Second Mate, Sook aad & Seaman.
A JOINT STATEMENT.
A The Second Mate, Mr, Cutter, the colored cook, Mr. John Gibson, and a sea- ‘man, Mr. James Crooks, who were on
luesday morning rescued from the sunken steamship Tunstall, arrived here this fore- noon. They were wet at the station by the Captain and reat of the crew. They are staying at the Ocean House, Pownal Street A representative of Tur EXAMINER called on thein af noon, To him Messrs.

statement :—
We left Pictou for Montreal on board the steamer Tunstail, on May 3rd. We _pro- ceeded to East Point, bat could not get passage through the Gulf. Then we turned and proceeded up the Straits to CapeSTraverse, but finding the ice cast anchor and remained until Tuesday, © We then started for East Point again, but met
ice off Souris as heavy as. before. ‘We however rounded Kast. Point and did. not meet with accident until Sunday
forenoon when a strong breeze was blowing and astrong current running. We were then off Cable Head. The ice commenced to gather around the steamer. Shortly the ice crashed against her side, the rivets cracked and the starboard side stove in. The Captain and a number of the crew went below and made an examination. They found water in the fore peak ; and Dn
removing the fore hatches found the starboard side burst in, and the water gushing into the hold. We were ordered to stop the leak and
worked hard to do it; but found it impos- sible. The steam pumps were kept going and we commenced to discharge cargo in order to lighten her. The captain and crew worked hard about two hours, but the water was flowing into the main compart- ment and the steamer was gradually sink- ing. We rewained at work on her until about five minutes before she went down. Previous to her sinking the boats were lowered and placed on _ the ice a short distance from the steamer and filled them with provisions, bedding, etc. Two pigs, which we had on board, were butchered, and we made ourselves as cone fortable as possible and decided to remain by the wreck, Early on Monday morning the shore loomed up and we made a start for it, When we got in hailing distance the ice separated and the second mate, Mr. Cutter, and our two selves (James Crooks aud John Gibson) were separated from the We could not reach them and were obliged to return to the ship, where we arrived at noon. On our arrival we dressed the two pigs, which were butchered, and cooked them and Jaid them aside in the boats to prepare for an emergency. We slept inthe boats on Monday night, and on Tuesday morning a party of six from St. Peter's Bay and Cable Head, viz: Michael Mc- Kenzie, Sr., Neil McKenzie, Andrew Simons, Alex. McKenzie, Stephen Suther- land, and Michael McKenzie, Jr,, came to our assistance with a dory. We arrived on snore about ten o’clock in the forenoon, and were kindly treated at a ferm house. The men say that they jid not take any- thing worth speaking of with them, though some of the crew saved a good deal, and that the Captain did not save fifteen shill- ings worth
The vessel lies four miles from the shore. A numberof farmers in the vicinity went out yesterday for the purpose of taking all the crew left on the ice to the shore. The men also report that, yesterday evening, the steamer Benona was carried off towards East Point, and could not be seen when they left Cable Head.

Island moneys improperly withheld from them by the United States Government, should go on and pay United States’ citizens moneys due to them by the United States Government ?
And what reason can Mr. Laird give for, at this particular time, attacking Mr. Myrick and parading the fact (?) that Messrs Hall & Myrick exerted their infinence in favor of liberal politicians. There is no Mr. Hall in the matter now. Mr. Myrick, who remains with us, is-a gentleman re- spected by all who know him, and couldn't possibly be (grit) in company with the Lairds, the Perrys, the Melntyres, and ail that sort of people. So give him a fair chance and don’t load him down with such associates.

Detention of Western Goods.
THe Straits of Northumberland west of Cape Traverse is closely packed with ice. Further west, towards Cape Egmont, tracts of open water may be seen; but off West Cape no open water cau be observed. The North Side, too, is bound with heavy ice, and the Straits and Bay between Charlotte- town Harbor and Cape George contain large fields of floating ice.
The state of our coast, at this season of
the year, almost unprecedented, It is par- ticularly felt at the west end of the Island, where not even. irregular communica- tion ean ' be commenced. Merchants, store keepers and tradérs in Summerside, and other western towns, have unfortunate- ly ordered theix goods to be shipped via Point du Chene. The goods are stored there in large quantities, and those which arrived first, and are most necessary, are so packed and situated in the freight shed that it is impossible to have them sent by Pictou. Again, a large number of horses, cattle and sheep, and quantities of oats await shipment from Summerside. But owing to the ice blockade in the Straita they have to be he!d or sent at an increased expense via Charlottetown and Pictou, So it will be seen that the spring is not only a backward one for our farmers, but for eur exporters and mariners. However, a change will, no @oubt, take place soon; and in the end we will, with the assistance of a kind Providence, be provided with as bountiful a harvest as in previous years.
