Second—They have dismissed the Inspec- tors—men who have filled their extremely ditticult positions to the entire satisfaction of the public and with credit to themselves; men of lorg experience, who had learned to know the needs of schools and teachers. In no province but our own would men of the stamp of ex-Inspector Arbuckle have been obliged to work so long for such a paltry salary; and he would have been dis- missed by none but men incapable of ap- preciating the quality of his work and reck- less of the conseqrences of their action. Third—They have dismissed the Super- intendent, a man who brought to his oner- ous position scholarship, enthusiasm, cour- tesy, anda determination to master the details and understand the duties of his office. Aud now that he has fitted him-

It is not my intention to enter into the question of the ability of the new officers to perform the duties they have undertaken. They are all, inexperie , and the ser- vice must of necessity suffer until they have acquired the education of those they have supplanted.

By the appointment of Mr. McLeod, a

position’ in Prince vf Wales College becomes vacant. The Government is thus given an opportunity of repairing the loss sustained by the college in the death of Mr. Le- Page. And we trust that a man will be appointed qualified to give his students a thorough training in their own language and a taste for its litersture ;—though, in view of past appointments, we have good ground for fear that all educational con- siderations will give way te party favorit- ism. But the greatest injury done ia the precedent established of making the tenure of our educational officers depend upon the life of a government. It will have the effect—it is now having the effect—of excluding our best men who cannot afford, and would scorn, to take office on such terms. While the Govern- ment is primarly responsible for the irrepar- able mischief done to edacation, those who have accepted the offices are not free from blame, for they must be taken to have assented to this prostitution of education to politics, and are therefore unworthy of the name of true educationists. Tne excuse, that if they had not taken the positions others might, may be made with equal force for any kind of crime, Xx.

Immigrants From Dakota.

The following is a copy of atelegrem re- ceived by the Minister of Agriculture from Winnipeg, which shows the activity of the} immigration movement from South Dakota ! to Manitoba and the Canadian Northwest :

**An immigrant party from Aberdeen county, South Dakota, arrived at Winni- peg last night in charge of Captain Holmes, Cars could not be got from the railway authorities to move all at once the coming immigrants. Another train will leave Aberdeen on ‘Thursday, and still another on Saturday. In all there will be 30 car loads. Those arrived are a five set of people, the cream of South Dakota. They are bringing their stock of implements with them. Some of them will bring from 50 | to 1C) head of stock. Fifteen parties have started to drive their stock across the coun- try, 400 miles. Representatives of South Dakota papers are at Winnipeg reporting the exhibition. They are well satisfied, and their reports cannot fail to be of use.”
