Cold storage facilities boost fish industry

Tignish fishermen landed a record making 35,000 pounds lobster with the top boat bring- ing in 1,300 pounds and several others over the 1,000 pound mark on a day in June during the sea- son. A total of 873,000 pounds market lobster were recorded during the two seasons 132,000 market lobsters were trucked to Boston. The remainder of the catch was processed at Judes Point.

FISH LANDINGS

been a boon to both farmers 5 and fishermen. It has brought a

lot of money to P.E.I. which has been spread out among a great many individual moss ga- therers.

tine. The extract derived from Irish Moss is used in hundreds of products. It is used as a stab- ilizer in chocolate milk, ice cream, drugs, ete., and for its gell properties in other products. It grows on rock ledges or on loose rocks from quite near shore out to a depth of several fathoms.

In the summer of 1941 when due to war conditions the impor- tation of moss became impos- sible, the larger users of Irish Moss had to look for other sour- ces of supply, and when their agents appeared in Tignish, the wheels of the moss industry started to roll. ’

With the disappearance of the ice on May 28 the moss business started _its-boom of the season. Tons o. Irish Moss was thrown up on the shoreline from Kil-
