It declarer ducks the king of hearts. the suit is continued. and again the contract is defeated. is fact, there is no way for South to make the hand against the king of hearts lead at trick two. All of which is easy enough to analyze when the four hands are seen, but should West have found the kill-

tricks for his side. It is a funda- mental prlnclple of defense that he should dismiss from considera tion hands his partner may have which do not lead to defeat of the contract. He must concentrate instead on possible hands East
may hold which can produce four tricks.
To assign to East the queen of hearts and the K-J of clubs may be consistent with the bidding. but it will not result in defeating the contract, since three heart tricks become available to declarer be- fore East can get both his club tricks. Similarly. consigning to East the ace of spades and king of clubs will not bring about dec- larer's defeat.
The only reasonable prospect of getting four tricks is that East has the heart queen and spade ace. The king of hearts should therefore be led at trick two.
