Correcting False Statements.

Sm,—In reading your paper among other letters I noticed one from Morell | written by ‘‘ Jim,” and referring to a trot on St. Peter’s Bay. He begins by saying

On account of some water being on the ice, and none of the sportsmen who called the trot being there, the sporting men present decided to go to St. Peter's Bay ice at or near the mouth of Morell, for there was less water an that ice (distance being on or about two mules from lake) and the ice zing better on the Bay, Young Harry, Old Harry and Molly Kate = did some very good trotting. The owners of these horses were thinking about going home when Wallace put in an appearance. Then everyone seemed anx- ious to get up another race. Young Harry, Old Harry, Molly Kate,and Wallace entered to trot three mile heats, best two out of three. (Mile was not measured.) Molly Kate took first and third heats, with Harry close behind. No doubt Wallace is a smart horse and a hard one to beat, but without a2.20 record. Come ‘‘Jim” don’t try to persuade the sensible men of Morell and elsewhere, that there was no trot. They are aware that you have brass enough for anything when you write such a falsehood. But come out with three mile heats best two with any sum from ten dollars to fifty

The Panama Canal impresses the visitor as being one of the most gigantic engineering enterprises of modern times. Among the many difficulties to be overcome are those of taking the canal throngh the Chagres River some twenty times, through a hill several hundred feet high by means of a deep cutting, and through numerous swamps and beds of rock. When completed, it will be over fifty miles in length, twenty of which are now so far finished as te admit water, three miles having a depth of 25 feet, and the remaining seventeen a depth of 8 feet.

Among the sketches, the port of Colon, or Aspinwall, at ouce attracts attention, with its extensive wharves and sheds running out into the sea. Alongside these huge ships of all nations are so secured as tou be ready ‘‘to slip” at short notice, in case of a gale coming on—a very hecessary precaution, as not long ago seventeen large vessels were driven from their moorings and totally wrecked by the violence of a tropical storm. The sea there is never still, and to guard against its violence the entrance to the canal has been protected by a large breakwater run out into the sea, formed of concrete blocks, at the end of which is a large statue of Christopher Columbus, presented by the Empress Eugenie.
