CURRENT NOTES.

Charles Harding Peters, the well known German naturalist and traveller, is dead.

Inthe German Reichsteg on the 24tha treaty of commerce with Servia was adopted,

Steamer Circassian, which sailed from London, on thé 25th, for St. John’s, Nfld, took 300 emigrant doborers from Spalding, Eng.

The steamer ‘Scandinavian,’ which sail- ed from Moville,on the 24th for Quebec and Montreal, brings 282 emigrants from County Mayo.

The Major General commanding the Curragh, Ireland, has ordered a large in- crease in the number of sentries on duty, the police having discovered a Fenian plot to attack the camp at an early day.

Herr Janrer, Director of Ring Theatre Vienna, at the time it was burned, who was convicted of negligence in connection with the disaster and sentenced to imprison- ment, has been pardoned by the Euperor.

Reports from Crawford, Ga, state that considerable damage was done by the storm

of the 23d. Many houses were blown down. Several persons were injured by lightning and falling houses. Great loss feared.

It is stated that the object of the alliance been Germany, Austria and Italy is to secure the isolation of France, in order to effect a simultaneous disarmament which Bismarck intends to propuse at a European congress.

Ship County, of Aberdeen, from Calentta, collided oft the Owners lightship with the ship British Commerce, bound for Mel- bourne. The latter vessel sunk with 25 of her crew. The weather was thick at the time of the collision.

The Swedish Anthropological Society has awarded Henry M. Stanley the medal in- stituted by the society in memory of the Vega The medal has been handed to the American Minister at Stockholm, to be forwarded to Stanley.

In the Houze of Lords on the 23rd Lord Dunraven called attention to the distress prevailing in lreland, and urged the adop- tion of a scheme for emigration on a large scale. The Maryuis of Landsdowne also spoke in favor of emigration.

After the wheat came up on a Kentucky farm, a sleet storm covered the field with ice. Before this melted a flood swep tover, and the ice, rising to the surface the of water, pulled every blade of wheat of out the ground and carried it away.

The real name of ‘‘ Featherstone,” one of the alleged dynamite conspirators in Dublia, is Edmond O’Brien.. Kennedy stated that he had turned informer, and is giving information to the authorities touch- ing the doings of the conspirators.

William Bradley, known as ‘ Billy the Kid,” has been missing from Ansonia since April 19. He was a native of Bir- mingham, Eng., and a well known boxer and sporting man. A suitable reward will be paid for information concerning his whereabouts.

An explosion occurred on the 25th, in a mine at Bessiges, in the arrendessement of Calais, France. Nine bodies thus far have been recovered. At the roll call, which was had after the explosion, 127 miners failed to answer to their names. and it is feared there are many victims.

In the cave were two jugs, partly fill of whiskey, and an iron gas pipe, coming from and leading to nowhere that they could perceive. On pulling this pipe, a piece of rubber hose was found to be attached to it, the outlet of which they did not discover. On cutting this hose whiskey ran out only in a small quantity. The whole stock-in-trade was not two gallons; but the keeper is one of the 1,162 who pay the ‘special tax.’ The penalty in this case is S100 fine and costs and six months in jail. In another place the entire stock was contained in two jank bottles, fastened to the belt, one on each side, under the outer skirt of the woman who kept the place. In another place the entire stock was in a flat tin vesse!, contain- ing about two quarts, fitted to the person and worn by the ‘ special tax" payer under his vest.”

The new jary in the Kelly case includes a publican named Wran, at whose house the murderers drank before going to the Pheenix Park. The sensation of the day in connection with the trial was when a Crown witness named McGlynn swore that Kelly was not among the four rgen seen by him in Pheenix Park on the evening of May 6th. The Crown solicitors were sur- prised at this statement, and fiercely cross- examined the witness. The incident is considered very important,

The cyclone in the vicinity of Americus, Ga., on the 23d, was t'nree hundred to a thovsand yards wide. Houses were blown down, forests levelled, and all vestige of fences swept @Way; cattle, swine, and horses were killed by hundreds ; al! farms and plantations im the track of the storm are 1n r¥ing, and the grain crops are de- stroved. Twenty-five people were killed and 200 wounded in this county. Many houses and mills with their contents, and animals and children were blown hundreds of yards.

Hon. Neal Dow wrires to the New York Sun persisting in his contention that the Maine law hze reduced the liquor traffic in the State to one twentieth of what it was.
