The Regina and Sultana mines at Rat Portage produced 17,000 ounces in gold during March. These mines operate only ten stamps each, and one only worked two days on aceount of a break in the machin- ery. The ore inthese mines and in the district averages one ounce of gold to the ton ofrock,a much higher average than South Africa, West Australia, British Columbia or Colorado.
July next is fixed as the time when Lord Dufferin will quit the diplomatic service and retire to end his days in ease, Lord Dufferin’s has been a long and active public career. It will be twenty-four years in June since he came to Canada as Governor-General, and since then he has been continually employed on duties that calied for the highest ability. He has well discharged them all. He deserves a rest, and many friends in Canada wil! hope that it will be a long and happy one. If it is proportioned to tue value of his gervices to his country, it will be both.
The London Times publishes a despatch from Pretoria which says: Presideut‘Kru- ger’s reply to Mr.Chamberlain is friendly aud conciliatory, but it fails to advance the negotiations. It repeats that the pres- ident cannot ask the Volksraad to consent to his visit to England until a ba is for the discussion is settled. No agreement has yet been arrived at, but hope is still entertained of a satisfactory settlement, says President Kruger. ~The Transvaal, he continues, cannot admit any right of a foreign power to interfere with its internal matters. It relies spon its independence in that respect provided by the London convention.
