The British and Russian Cabinets have given their opinion of the Turkish note that it is altogether a unit to form the basis gof farther negotiations. While communica- ting this opinion, the Briitish Cabinet has urged the immediate resumption of com- bined action’ on a larger scale, namely to make a naval demonstration nearer Con- stantinople without abandoning the demon- stration at Dulcigno.

Wm. Lassell, F. R. L., LL. D., the emi- nient astronomer, is dead. Dr. Lassell was born at Bolton, in Lancashire, on June 18th, 179%, and was therefore in his 82nd year at his death- He had but a limited education when he had to go into business, his father dying when he was but seven yeara old, but when he had time he engaged in his favorite study of astronomy. He in- vented a aumber of improved telescopes and discovered several satelites. His last work in astronomical science was the con- struction of a larger equatorial telescope than had previously been made, the dvs- cription of which and the work done with it constitute the 36th volume of the Astron- omical Society’s Memoir.

ACADEMY oF Music.—-Next week will bea gala week at the Academy. On Monday evening Miss Violet Campbell takes a benefit, tor which she offers an unusually strong Imll. ‘The histrionic merits of this lady entitle her te public support, for during her stay here she has given us an unusually good specimen of emotional acting in East Lynne, whilst her rendition of Lady Audley and the Countess in Two Orphans were tive character paintings, and her comedy acting in farces has been un- equalled in our city. Add to all this her able vocalization and we have a thorough artiste. The piece de resistance .is Bulwer’s Lady of Lyons, in which she appears as Pauline, a part in which she has no equal— having played it successfuly not only throughout the United She will also give one of her admirable elocutionary efforts be- tween the pieces, and will likewise appear in the farce. We hope our citizens will rally round her and give her a bumper. The band of the 82nd battalion have consent- ed to play on the occasion. During the Exhibition two performances will be given daily to afford our country cousins an oppor- tunity of seeing the Academy. Capt. Hickey, otlicers and men patronize on Thursday, the
