Japan laments the decrease of foreign visitors, who formerly spent so much money in the country. e Biddy Sitting on Five Kittens.
An attendant at the Rome State Custo- Gial Asylum a day or two ago found a hen with singular maternal tastes. The hen had shown a great predilection to sit and was finally found ona nest in the barn. The attendant took her out of the nest and was amazed to find that she had been sit- ting on five wee kittens. The hen evinced so strong au affection for her queer family that it was almost impossible to keep her away from the nest, In spite of the pains taken she was back on the nest again the next day, but all except one of the kittens had been taken away. It ia suppose | that she came across the kittens in their home and, after driving the mother away, adopt- ed them as her own, and that when she was taken off the nest the old cat eerried all but one of her kittens away.—Rome (N. Origin of the Word Honeymoon,
It was formerly a custom among Ten- tonic nations to driuk a liquor maie from honey, and called hydromel, for a moving age (a month) after the wedding feast, hence the name “honeymoon.” The Tea- tons knew very little about treacle, as we learn thatthe name Teutoni was given, 230 B.C., to a race of people who had long been settled in the country, and in the provinces which are now known respect- ively as Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein, but which were then known respectively as Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein, but which were then known collectively as the Chersonesus Cimbrica, The Teutons may even lave brought the custom to England with them when they came over the Kim merian Bosphorus about 680 B.C,
