Searrie, Aug. 18.—The steamer Alki arrived this morning from Alaska. This afternoon Willis Thorp was handed a letter by amanwhocame down on the Alki from Dyea. It was written by Edward Thorp, and came overland, saying that he had cleaned up $130,000 in the Klondike in cight weeks and was coming home on the steamer Portland, which is due in Seattle on August 26. Thorp left Seattle one year ago, having gone north with a drove of cattle.

Mr Carlisle coutends that there are only three nossibe constructions of the law. According to the first of these construc- tions it was designed to encourage Ameri- can shipping interests by discriminating against goods produced in non-contiguous country by vessels not of the United States and thence imported into the U aited States. A very very considerable portion of the brief is devoted to adiscussion of this proposition. It is shown that the section : ° it passed both houses of congress, related only to goods carried ip certain classes of vessels, the conference committee had no right to change its character and did not intend to do so; that it was not understood in either the house or senate when the cou- ference report was under consideration that the purposa) of the original section had been changed, and he quotes from the siaitmeuts of Senator Allison and Mr. Dingley, who had charge of the reports, to show that this was the case.

This company, we understand is the first syndicate formed in Cavada and already thev have despatched an expedition to the gold fields of the Klondyke. The object of the expedition sent out a short time ago is to explore and locate claims in the Klondike and the tributaries of the Yukon and mine them, and also to buy up desirable claims. The Company’s engineer, Mr. Bernard McDonald, is a man of 25 years experience among the mines of America, and he is admitted to be at the head of his profes- sion. It is now conceded that the Montreai London Company is the strongest and most Jegitimate mining company operating in Canada. Messrs. Clarence J.
