More Oil Lands Leased In North

OTTAWA ‘CP) — Applications covering another 20,000,000 acres were received Monday from com- panies laying claim to oi] and gas exploration rights in the Are- tic archipelago.

The northern = affairs depart-| ment said the increase sends the total soaring to an estimated 72,000,000 acres—all since Jan. 22.

An official said the figures were run through late Friday after applications had been cut off for the day and the total was set at 51,422,000 acres-—about 8,500,000 under the previous es- timate for the day.

About another 2,000,000 acres were applied for Monday, he said.

It has been estimated that the area involved may have about 150,000,000 acres of potential oil- bearing rock and that the whole archipelago may have in the neighborhood of 300,000,000 acres of oil-rich land and water.
