This decision, over- turning as it does some of the former decisions of United States Supreme Court, and overriding the police powers of the State in the of its right to ‘protect the health, morals and well-being ot its citizens,’ is far-reaching, and likely to lead to far more important results than any other decison of the court for a century.”

A Reform Necessary.

Sim,—I notice in the Darry EXAMINER of the 18th inst., a communication signed \** Pair Play,” and headed ‘‘ A Grievance.” ‘I cannot understand what grievance ‘ Fair |Play” can have. It may be this: The steamer is delayed at low tide in getting to the esplanade, the freight cannot be landed, the hop beer remains on board, the clique jare fearfully dry, and they become desper- ‘ate. This appears to be the only reasonable grievance that can be accounted for by the | writer of the article signed ‘* Fair Play.” | The writer of the letter signed ‘‘ Justice” isaid nothing about a rebellion against the {Dominion or Local Governments. These lare the words used; ‘‘ If the managers or lthose who have contrel of the steamer do {not give the people of this section of the jcountry better accommodation, I fear they | will petition the Government to withdraw ithe subsidy and provide some boat that will look after the interests of the public and not confine the monopoly to a few grabbers.” Is this a rebellion against the Government ? The man does not know what he is talking about. I have it on good authority that there was a man fell over- board; surely the clique must have been ‘awfully muddled when they could not see the occurrence.

Of this there is not the slightest doubt, and the great riches of Brazilian trade so long monopolized by monarchical nations are ready to be poured into Ame- rican enterprises, if American business men only know how to profit by the experience of other nations in this regard. Goods should be prepared especially to suit Braz- llian wants and tastes, and furnished ex- actly in the mode practiced by Brazilian business men. A sample trade wil! neither be suitable nor accepted. The English, Germans snd French tried it, but in vain, and only built up their large and profitable business with this country by first studying the tastes and wants of the people, anc then sending out their goods in bulk to be offered for sale. American enterprise will be welcomed here, and will receive special favors. The Brazilians look upon the lowering of dutles on sugar as a favor ex- tended to Brazil, and should the American Government treat other Brazilian products in the same manner, the import duties here on kerosene, breadstuffs and cther Ameri- can products will very soon be fairly regu: lated by the government.”

The great strike on the New York Cen- tral continues, and there is a serious block- ade of freight. Passenger trains are run- ning.

The French aeronaut Besancon and the astronomer Hermite propose to make a balloon expedition to the north pole, start- ing from Spitzbergen.

The census shows that Maine has not increased her population during the last ten years ; in fact, the population is less by 1,200 odd than it wasin 1880.

The potato disease in Ireland is spreading with alarming rapidity through the soutk.rn portion of the County Down. In all parts of Armagh the blight has assumed serious proportions.

The annual session of the American As- sociation for the Advancement of Science is in sessicn at Indianapolis and will continue for ten days. Many prominent scientists from the United States and Canada are present.

One of the largest forests in the world stands on ice, It is situated between Ural and the Okhotsk Sea. A well was recent- ly dug in this region, when it was found that ata depth of 116 metres the ground was still frozen.

Further particulars concerning the Wilkesbarre cyclone represent that the por- tion of the city which it struck is a confused mass of ruins. Quite 400 buildings are destroyed or injured, and the loss will foot up to $1,000,000, Eleven persons are killed, nine fatally injured, and twenty-four are seriously hurt. The electric light ser- vices are destroyed.

The port of Vancouver, British Columbia, is fast progressing to a first rank, Three years ago it was made a customs port of entry, and comparing the statistics of trade in the years ending June 30th, 1888, and June 30th, 1890, these remarkable increases are showe: The value of imports and ex- ports increased from $834,439 to $1,183,- $05, the number of vessels inwards and outwards from 1,523 to 2,783, anc. the ton- nage from 821,005 tons to 1,624,952 tons, while the value of goods entered for con- sumption rose from $50,519 to $210,516. In four years the population of Vancouver has increased from nothing to 15,000.
