FURTHER investigation into the recent fire in Palmer’s Lane by the aergeare this morning revealed nothing new. No satisfac- tory evidence was forthcoming sufficient to fasten the crime upon the guilty party,though itis pretty gencrally believed that young Horne could, without much trouble, put his hand upon the criminal. A strict watch, however, will be kept up, and, should he be discovered, he will, no doubt, suffer the ex- treme penalty of the law. >
Av the Stipendiary Magistrates court this morning, Horne, who was tried a few days ayo, for setting the fires in Palmer's Lane, but who was discharged owing to lack of evidence, was tried for another serious offence, that of making too free and careless a use of a revol- ver. So that he conduct himself properly in the future, he was bound over to keep the peace for one year, and in default of finding two securities of 350.00 each, he was to sojourn in the Queen’s County Jail for 30,days. He will probably sojourn.

Mr. Onartes G, D. Roperts, M. A., of Fredericton, removes to Toronto where he will take the editorial chair of a literary, political and critical. journal, which will likely succeed the Bystander, as it is presumed that the latter will be discontinued after the Uctober number. The proprietors of the new journal will be Professor Goldwin Smith and ©. Blackett Robinson, of Toronto. It will be a weekly journal and will be issued in November, will he independent in politics and will be called The Canadian Journal. The appointment of Mr. Roberts as editor-in-chief will be universally approved by those who are familiar with his scholarly attainments, any!

That article on “plucky Prince Edward Island,” reproduced in your columns of last Wednesday, deserves the utmost attention. The lucky possessor of your issue of that day (the 12th inst) should keep it safely. The truths of the article referred to are something which Islanders can remember with pride and satisfaction, and as the Philadelphia Industrial Review states ‘‘there is every reason for the Dominion of Canada to regard Prince Edward Island as a valu- able section of her territory”—we don’t intend to let Canada forget it either.
Our merchants are beginning to lay in fall stock. Consignments of woollens have arrived. Our Island factories send some fine samples, Island clothes are, in many instances, of a superior quality, to the im- ported article, and they have the advantage of being cheaper than the foreign goods.
