NEWFOUNDLAND has passed the necessary legislation for the extension of its railway from Harbor Grace to Placentia Bay. Pla- centia is but thirty hours by steamer from Louisburg. When the continental railway system is extended to the latter harbor, as it mast be before long, with the extension of the short ferry just referred to, St. John’s, New- foundland, will be reached by rail.
Tue schooner Dictator, from Canso, with flour, arrived at Souris on Monday last, and on Wednesday the schooners Mary Joseph, Capt McCarthy, and Mary Jane, Capt. Thistle, both of Souris, sailed, the latter loaded with oats for Halifax, and the former with potatoes for Antigonish, N. S. The steamer Beaver also left Souris the day before. Considerable quantities of ice are still off East Point. Several vessels are now in the Gut of Canso waiting for a chance to get over to the Island, but ice prevents.
Baruvust, N. B., says the St. John Tele- jraph, is a very lively town. Four local sen- sations were reported there last week, and either of the occurrences would have been worthy of the total depravity of a large city. he most interesting event was a fight between two young women, in which the larger knocked out the smaller in the first round, and then*poured kerosene oil over her and kicked her. A day or two after, a Newcastle man found his runaway wife ia a Bathurst hotel, and, being unable to get at her, wreak - ed his vengeance upon the landlord, who was left almost dead. In the same day, two hoys, aged 1] and 12 years, assaulted a small girl, cutting off her hair and beating her —for which exploit the local justice fined the ring- leaier 34. That very afternoon, a man had his head split open by a bar-keeper for order- ingadrink for ~hich he was unable to pay. All this hilarity would seem to indicate that Hathurst is bound to keep up with the times.
Tae members of the French academy of St. Dunstan's College, closed the season's entertainments by « drama, produced before a full house yesterday evening. The Vollege hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion. Among the visitors we noticed the Cathedral clergy, His Honor Judge Reddin, the Hon. J. O. Arsenault, A. B. Warburton, Esq. and several other citizens. The performance was in every Way @ success, and clearly demonstrated to the strangers present the practical and thorough manner in which the language of la belle France is taught at St. Dunstan’s. At the close of the performance the Hon. Mr. Arsenault congratulated the students who had taken part in the play, and St. Dunstan's College on the place she gave in her curriculin to his mother tongue. Judge Reddin also made some appropriate re- marks, and the audience dispersed, very ne with what they had seen and

Mr. Hudspeth, the new member for South Victoria took his seat to-day. He was introduced by Sir John and Mr. White and laudly cheered.
Mr. Fisher moved to rescind the order respecting the election of the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committe. He
especially, as no appointment had yet been made.
Sir John replying, soon removed all doubts on the matter by = de- claring that the Government would oppose the retrograde action proposed and that he was only waiting till disposing of fish- eries motion, which having been delayed at his (the Premier’s request) he had con- sidered it discourteous to anticipate a pre- vious appointment, and that he proposed to move in the matter of the election of deputy speaker to-morrow.
Lister replied and Langevin responded, after which a vote was taken, the ‘result was for Lister's motion sixty-six against one hundred and nine, the Government’s was 43. On the basis of this vote the Gov- ernment’s majority was forty-five.
A TERPIBLE EXPLOSIOY.
The Imprisoned Miners
ALL HOPE ABANDONED.
Nanaimo, B. C., May 5. A terrible explosion of gas took place on Tuesday evening in No. 1 shaft of the Vancouver Coal Company's mine, in which upwards of one hundred and fifty miners were at the time. Nine white men and four Chinese were brought out through No.
1 shaft. It is absolutely impossible to think of getting at the imprisoned men until the fire is subdued, and all hope of rescuing any
one m the mines has been abandoned. The business houses are all closed, and the entire population is gathered at the scene of the disaster.

Bancor, Me., May 5.
The condition of matters on the Penob- scott river as regards the flood is unimprov- proved to-day. Trains go from this city to old turn twelve miles away by running very carefully, but above that they are un- able to go. A large amount of the St.John >mail was sent from here to Portland yester- day, but the steamer refused to take it and it was returned.
