' What isliniversity?
—it is a community where everybody knows everybody else and hot gossip is old news. -it is a place where people who do drugs walk around-in sunglasses,long hair,beards and dirty jeans, to show everyone what non conformity is all about. -it is a place where you can get your head together if you don't take exams,deadlines and footnotes,as well as a few fellow stu- dents, too seriously. ‘
:i-it is a suburb of Gentleman Jim's. —it‘is aplace where you check your mail four, maybe five, times a day. —it is a place where talk of a co—ed res- idence is still talk. . —it is a place where students still talk of Fitzie days. -it is a place where an independent course of study is available to students with in: itiative. _ ' -it is a place'where two religiouly conser vative universities were formed into one religiously conservative university. -it is a place that alienates out-of—resi- dence students as much as in-residence st- udents. ’ ‘ —it is>aplace where you can't hold a "Grer se—IN" because half the students wouldn't have to dress up. -it is aplace where the professors are mo- re radical than the students.

n—it is aplacegwhere girls still wear long v . . gowns,and guys sport shirt,tie,and jacket when they want to look nice.

Why is University?
MEMO: Could you please tell me why we're here? Even they don't know why we're here. ITEM: An organization which doesn't know why it exists is in trouble. Why does the university exist? Choose one reason from the following:
(A) To keep the kids off the street dur- ing their identity crises. (Erik Erikson says that these happen in your early twe- nties.) (The Great Protector Theory).
(B) To turn out cultured individuals,su- perbly equipped with a knowledge of Ein- stein physics,molecular biology,the ma- ting habits of New Guinea woodpeckers and social stratification in Montreal to ena- ble the graduate to quote liberally from Trudeau,McLuhan,Freud,and McCartney. (The Dilettante Theory).
_ (C) To provide students with a critical view of their society and suggested means that they can use to correct the problems they have discovered and studied. (The SOCially Relevant Theory).
(D) To dehumanize the individual to the extent that he fits into society in some "useful" form or another. (The We-Have-a Wheel-Which—Needs-a—Cog—Theory).
(E) To give a guy a dgreee in return for some suffering so that he can get a better job than the next guy and earn more money. (The Deferred Gratification Theory).
(F) To have fun,to meet a lot of people, ‘to talk-and explore ideas and discover yoa urself. (The Existential Hedonist Theory).
(C) To provide an intellectual community of scholars and a place where research can take place. (The anastery Theory).
