An interesting address on his re- cent visit to British Columbia was given at Prince Street School last evening. by Mr. Henry Smith, chairman of the School Board. Mr. Jas. Paton presided, there be~ ing o. good attendance in addition to the senior pupils of the school, who also contributed towards the

programme with choral numbers, _

recitations, readings and dances. At the conclusion of the address a warm vote of thanks moved by llir. n. H. Rogers, Superintendent of Education, seconded by l\ir. D. Edgar Shaw and supported by Mr. S. F. Hodgeon was tendered the speaker.

Mr. Smith in his address describ- ed a delightful three months visit to British Columbia inst summer. lie spoke in part as follows:

"We left home on the 28th of June, and arrived in the city of New Westminster on the night of t-heflth of July. i will not attempt to describsthe trip across the con- tinent. The massage over the Rock- ies, and through the Crow's Nest ‘Pass is really beyond description. it is almost impossible to imagine how ingenuity could conceive and work out a plan to run a roadway over, around and through those stupendous mountains, towering above the clouds. and covering so many miles of territory through which it was absolutely necessary to travel. British Columbia has been well described as "a Sea of fiiiountains." Alter leaving the twn great ranges, the railway rune for lmndreds of miles along the hor- ders of tho rivers. high upon the mountain sides. and often through immense tunnels and over bridges. many hundred feet above the wat- ers that flow beneath. This wonder- ful undertaking. which makes it so easy now to cross the continent. must be seen to be fully apvrev iated. The grounds are generally shaded with large trees and well supplied with wator. tit is not an uncommon sight to see the family wash hanging on the lino as you pass along the road.

d have driven many times in an auto upon this il-l-ighway -at the rate of 30 and 35 miles an hour nml sometimes u good deal faster than that. One of the most interesting trips we had was a drive to tho town of Blain in the State of Wash- ington. and to go there we. of course. had to cross the Boundary line. Here we ‘met not only the Custom ‘House officer of each coun- try. but dozens of automobiles waiting to bo examined for dutlahlo goods and especially liquor from British Columbia going into the United States. As our party was made up of- relatives of the driver who knew the oilicer. we had iiitic difficulty in passing either way. ‘For miles along the Highway a pro- cession of cars could be seen going both ways at a good rate or speed.

The most interesting thing we saw in our visit to Blain was the ‘Peace Arch erected two years ago at a great cost to celebrate one

hundred years of peace between the United States and the Domin- ion of Canada. It iii about thirty

Large Attendance Ai Agricultural Build- ing Yesterday.

There was a large attendance at the Provincial Horse Show yester- day afternoon nud eventing. and the show, which was held in the Agri- cultural l-iall, Fitzroy Strce.t was undoubtedly well worth a visit by anyone interested in horses. There were 135 entries. and the clusse-s were all well represented. The show was formally opened in the afternoon but the largest at- tendance wits, (luring the evening, when the hall was filled with spec- tators. The G. W. V. A. band was lu attendance and rendered spirit- ed music.

There were as usual large en- tries in the carriage and general purpose classes and in draft mares and geliliugs. The following were among the championship winners:

Dedication Last Night 0i New Western I Memorial Front and Ornament t0 Baptistry.

For the Anglican Church in this Province the animal service of the Diocesan Church Society held at St. Peters Cathedral inst evening was more than usually inspiring and impressive.

At this service the new western front of the Cathedral. erected as a memorial to the late Canon Simp~

as a memorial to Sister Theresa Cundall an outstanding figure in the early days of St. Peters, were dedicated.

The church was completely fill- ed including the gallery in the new front and with the chancel bril- llantly lighted and with the large choir and the visiting clergy the impressivenesg- of the interior of the church was most striking. Among visitors in attendance were His Honor the Lieutenant Govern- or and Mrs. MacKinnon, ministers of a number of the city churches and the Speaker and several of the members of the Provincial Legis- latnre.

The service was Evening Prayer the incumbent, Rev. E. M. Malone singing the service and Rev. G. F. Seymour of Alberton anti Mr. Rand of Crapnuti reading the lessons. '

After the collects the choir pre- celled by the Cathedral Cross form- od in procession and singing the hymn the Church's One Founda- tion" moved to the new western front, where Rural Dean White. rector of Summersitle, dedicated the tucmorials. Then the choir and clergy singing u hymn written for the occasion by Mr. W. Edgar Enman returned to the chancel. Vulnerable Archdeacon Watson trrcacheil an inspiring service tak- ing as his theme the emulation of great and good characters and making fitting reference to tho lives and works of those to whose memory the memorials had been erected. The special hymn No. 362 for the ilcdicatlon of churches was beautifully sung and the benc- ditation by the incumbent of St. Peters brought to a close it service the memory of WIlICil will be in- fleiibly stumped nn the minds of those privileged to be present.
