Once part. of the Belgian colony of Ruanda-Urundi, Burundi gained independence in 1962, largely as a result of UN general assembly pres- sure on Belgium. Even before inde- pendence was granted, unsavory in- cidents occurred in the Watusi ruled kingdom. A UN group including two Canadians reported . atrocities. But accprding to Canadian sources, this report was suppressed by a UN com- mission which the general assembly set up to put pressure on Belgium.

The matter came to a head last November, when the International Federation of Christian Trade Unions
