The McLeod Case.

An Ottawa cespatch to the Halifax Herald says:—On the 30th ult. in the Sup-eme Court was heard the case of Mc- Lewd vs Queen. The appeal was from Mr Justice Henry, sitteng m the Court of Exechequer, by which he aliowed the claimant some $36 000 for injuries sustained by bim whilst a passenger on the Prince Edward Island Railway. Lash, Q C., and Hodgson, Q. C, of Chatiottetown, on behalf of the Crown, and Mr. Davies, Q C., for respondent. The counsel for the Crown contended, first, that the accident was not bronght about by negligence of the crown or its «flicsrs in charge of the railway: sec nd that the cor tract to carry safely, as far as the exercise of pecsonal care aud fore signt could provide; implied between a passenger or passengers on an ordinary railway, and the railway company, could not be implied against the Crown, as such @ contract necesssrily imputed negligence upen the part of te servants of the Crown, aod the Crown could not be made liable by petition of right for such neg) yence ; third. that the damages were excessive As the Court was opposed to the first and las: contentions of the Crown and would hear no arguinent upon these points the whole weight of argumert was therefore directed to the question of lability of the Crown as carriers. Judgment was reserved. It was agreed between the counsel that four other appeals on the list of a like character and envolving similar points, should abide by the decision of this case.

Scotch Fisheries.

A Seottish fishery board reports that 4,111,155 berrels of herring were cured ia 1531 under offiial superintendence. This is tn» third time that the cure has exceeded a million, the years 1874 and 1880 being the other occasions. The average of the last five years has been nearly one million yearly, and as each barrel contains between seven and eight hundred fish, the total is about seven handred and fifty mJlions fr each year. A large portion of the nightly ca'ch is sent to warket early in the morn- ing, so the figures above given do uot repre- sent the total catch. Tue Boom IN Hovses.—There are no empty houses in Mor cton, but there is a most urgent demand for more dwellings. The de- mand increases and has attained thedimensions of “a house famine.” If perchance a vacancy occurs there are as many ap. lications for it #s for a vacant government office. Rents are very high, yet would be tenants constanr!y tid against each other, and in several recent cases have offered three months rent in ad vance for a house to shelter them. A number are now hopelessly hunting for houses which it is impossible to find.
