Tue first instalment of the September meeting at Upton Park took place yestery day. The day was clear and pleasant, the track in excellent condition, and the ens tries of & competitive kind. . There were over 600 people on the ground, with a large eprinkling of ladies. The. judges were Dr. S. W. Dodd, C. C. Gatdiner, Reuben Tuplin and James Currie, Esquires. | A serious accident occurred at the conch. gion of the bridle race, in which a boy named Abel Dower was run over, and the horse and man nearly thrown. to the ground. First Heat.—At the siart Belle took the jead and was first at the quarter pole, fole

lowed by Island Maid, Rapid Roan, Nellie, Jennie and Saucy Dan in rotation. Belle

continually spurted along, and was followed ata good distance by Island Maid. On nearing the half-mile, all with the excep~- tion of Jennie, were for some moments on a full gallop, causing them to closely quar- ter Belle at the time of passing the pole. Island Maid passed second, followed in position by Nellie, Saucy Dan, Rapid Roan and Jennie. This position was held until the finish, ;

Second Heat.—The horses came up in good shape, and got the word ‘ go’’ av*che third effort, with Island Maid getting a little the bestof it. All were well up ex- cept Saucy Dan. Nellie, Rapid Roan and Belle raced hotly for the second!position at the quarter-mile pole; Island Maid having the first, the second was taken by Jennie, with Nellie, Bel’e, Saucy Dan and Rapid Roan in sequence. The race, after passing the quarter pole, became exciting. Jennie collared the Maid and gave her the go-by in good style, followed by Belle—both Meii ead Belle going off their feet—were passed by Jennie and Nellie. This position was held the full course to the finish. The trotting in this heat was

Fourth Rieat,—This heat was similar to the third. At the time Bill lead the way, be was followed by Jennie, Maid, Dan and Nellie. Thia position was maintaimed to the finisb.
