A cablegram was received at the depart- ment of agriculture at Washington from the agent of the department in Loadon, announcing that the English officials thought they had discovered a case of pleuro-pneumonia in one of the cattle shipped on the Maryland. To learn whe- ther pleuro-pneumonia exists in this country, an inspector was ordered to Ken- tucky woexamine the herd from which the animal is known to have come.
British authorities report a slow but perceptible increase in the shipment of high-class woolen goods to the United Statee. If they were wise, however, they would hold their peace about such a mat- ter. The feeling at the present time is such that anything whieh tends to show that the existing tariff encourages the im- port of foreign goods is likely to raixe a demand for a change that will reverse the position.
Final arrangements are being made fur the construction of the great American university to be erected under the super- vision of the Methodist Church, in the suburbs of Washington. The endow- ment now amounts to over $700,000. The university will be surrounded by 90 acres of high and beautiful ground. The gen- eral plan provides for three buildings, probably cuunected. It is imtended that the whole project shall involve $5,000,600.
A writer from Georgeville, in the Water- loo (Ont.) Advertiser, in commending Mr. Rider, the Liberal M.P. for Stanstead, mentions among the things in which he excels Mr. Colby, the old member, that he is “the holder of mortgages to such an extent that he is considered one of the wealthiest men in the county.” Mr. Rider seem. io have uvne very well in a country that a guod many of his fellow Liberals abuse as being ou the read to commercial death. To be the holder of mortgages to an extent to provoke such admiration is an achievement indeed.
A despatch to the London Times from Shanghai says that the efforts ef foreigners to reach the Chinese wounded met with ama!) success. The wounded Chinese mostly remain at Simenting, between New Chang and Moulden, the state of the country preventing the Chinese medical staft and the foreign volunteers from pro- ceeding there. Wounded stragglers have reached Moulden and New Chang, and some of them have even reached Tien Tsin, where they have been attended to, but no succor has reached the main body of the Chinese wounded.
The arrival of 14,000 bales of cotton at Vanchester by way of the ship canal will be very welcome to the shareholders and to the citizens, for the City Council is deeply involved in the undertaking.
