Men's Volleyball

Recently eight brave men and their coach ventured to Quebec City to participate in a volleyball tournament held January 2-4. In their first match of the tourney against Royal Military College(RMC), the boys sent them to boot camp beating them 3 sets to 2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 16-14). Don't worry RMC didn't leave empty- handed; they were saluted for their efforts. '

In the second match of the day, the boys lost to 3-0 to Sherbrooke (25-15, 25-16, 25-21). In the game,

the boys were forced to put up some intolerable fan shouting from the Sherbrooke fans. What they were shouting for was unclear as it was in French. Perhaps they were shouting for their sovereignty or just the fact that they loved the pony tail on one of their players, It will remain a mystery. The next day, the boys played their third match against McGill los- ing 3-1 (17-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23) to a team which had they beaten (which they very well could have) would have put them in the semis and least guaranteed them fourth place. That night, the boys played

UNBSJ and lost a very close match to team they ordinarily beat 26-24, 9-25,

25-23, 22-25, 15-12. Faced with injuries and a very short bench, the

boys played well, but came up short of sending UNBSJ back to the stench of

Saint John from whence they came with another loss.

In the last day of the tourney, the boys played Saint Thomas

University (STU) in the seventh place

placement game, losing some close sets 25-19, 25-23, 25-23. The long tournament and injuries had played a

toll on the team and the boys did well

to pull off some close sets to a team

with much more game experience.

Overall, the boys place eight out of twelve teams, but this place- ment was be no means indicative of the competitiveness these boys demonstrated throughout the tourna- ment. Team members of the team included: Neal ‘143' Manning, Matthew ‘Banana Bread' O'Halloran, Chris ‘Mr Bilingual’ Linzel- Waddell, Ryan ‘Tables’ Innis, Mike ‘Stallion Italian’ Morello, Andy ‘Big 10' Hutchings, Doug ‘The Libero' Eamer, Peter ‘Money Shot' North and special guest coach Mark ‘Lombardi’ O'Halloran.
