The term "weakness" is used by patients to describe a. variety of subjective ( sit by the patient but not seen or own by the physician, such as headache) complaints which may vary in importance. Most of the subjective included in this term will be found to be per- sistent or recurrent or temporary weakness." .

I am quoting from the book "Principles of Internal Medicine" by Dr. T. R. Harrison and Assoc- iates, southwestern Medical school. Universityof Texas. Dallas.

These physicians make a dis- tinction between lack of energy (lassltude) due often to emotional disturbances. and the loss of mus- cular strength (asthenia, dcbility) which may be due to serious dis- orders of glands. or of nerves and muscles, or, more commonly. to old age or prolonged bed rest.

Loss of muscular strength may be due to weakness of a group of muscles or all the muscles of the body.

1. Lassitude. Listlessness. mal- aise, undue fatigability and lack of energy as characterized by loss of well-being, which occurs at times in persons who are healthy in both body and mind.

The mechanism of chronic or persistent lassltude is due to emo- tional disturbances. conflict within the personality. "if a person is so busy reconciling or adjusting him- self to a myriad of fears, hates, or dissatisfactlons, he will be unable to spend energy usefully in produc- tive pursuits." Thus lassitude is an early symptom in 'neurosis (think- ing you have an ailment that is not really present), depression or psy- chosis, and is to be regarded as a "distress" signal from a body lab- oring under unwelcome stress.
