SprausG a Leax.—'lhe master of the brigt. ‘*‘A McLeod,’ which arrived at Bristol. Eng., on the 16th ult., from this port reports that his vessel sprung a leak on the 4th Dec., in the Atlantic.

A Harp Passage —During the recent passage of the brigt. ‘‘Lauretta, from this} port to Bordeaux, that vessel strained a good deal on the voyage, and made water. The cargo also shifted ard the vessel took a strong list. Her pumps, however, were kept free.

Tue young man who, a few eveings ago, converted the streets of the city into a race- esurse, in his attempt to make a ‘‘ thorough- bred” eclipse the time of Rarus was, by the Stipendiary Magistrate, on Tuesday morning, tined $4 or 20 days for a breach of the by-law relating to ‘‘disorderly driving.”

Latery we have had the pleasure of see- ing the examination papers of a young lady from this city who is attending St. Mar- garets’s Hall, Halifax, and feel that the work done there is thorough. Several of the young ladies last year passed a credit- ahle examination at Windsor, King’s College. St. Margarei’s Hall is under the patronage of the Lord Bishop of Nova Scotia, who takes great interest in the young ladies. We are glad to know that the daughter of Mr. Alex- ander Brown is finishing her education at that Seminary, and was the respected guest of the Rev. J. and Mrs. Padfield dur- ing the helidays.

DANIeEL CARROLL was arrested, and this (Tuesday) morning examined by the Stipen- diary Magistrate on charge of being one of two persons whe, om Saturday evening last, entered the Biblé Christian, Sunday Scheolroom and stole the the contents of three money boys, conBjsting of ‘‘ one quarter's collections.”” The, Smperintendent ef the Sunday School and thekeeper of the Bible Christian Church qwere _ only wit- nesses examined ; ani the prisomér was_re- manded until to-morrow for further examia- tion. The keeper testified®that on Saturday evening at 6.30 he went t@ the. church and found the prisoner in the porch which leads to the Sunday School. It ae he lita match, recognized the prisener, ke to’him, and not suspecting anything, let him pass out. He (the keeper) then passed into the Schoslreom. Here, was another man whom he did not recovnize, and who on see- ing him (the keeper) tried tomake his eseape. The keeper locked the door, placed a man in charge of the building, and went to-seek the services of a policeman. On their return they found that that the man had made his escape. On entering the Schoolroom then, they found that the cupbeard had been pried open and the contents of the money boxes stolen. The Superintendent testified that the boxes con- tained about four dollars.

FEBRUARY 3. William H. Mitchell vs. Patrick R. Bowers. This case is still before the Court. The plain- tiff has been on the witness stand allday. It is expected it will go to the Jury to-morrow evening.

He never had to fight his way around the city to Shirpur. He had, im December, firewood for four months, and forage for 54 days. The idea of aforced retreat upon Jellalabad never suggested itself here. Lonpon, Feb. 2.

Seme of the weekly and periodical news- papers have for some weeks past asserted that Lord Lytton was coming home direct- ly and made various nominations of his auceessor n Vice Royalty, including Lord Dufferin and the Under Secretary of State for India.

The T.imes semi-oflicially asserts that there is no truth in the reports that Lord Lytton is desirous of leaving India, and hence it follows that there is no question of choosing his successor.

Letters to the Golos from Susdal in the Province of Viadimor reports that an arch- bishop and two bishops ef the faith of old believers are confined in a fortress there,on account_of their creeds. The Archbishop has been there 26 years, and the Bishops 22 and 17 years respectively. The Golos, in a leader on the, subject, sup- poses they had been forgotten by the authoritics.

Orrawa, Feb. 2.

It is understood that the Government have definitely determined to adopt the Southern route in Manitoba for the rail- way, and that the telegraph line at present erected north of Lake Manitoba will be moved te the South.

The Supreme Court of Canada will open to-morrow and deliver judgment on the South Ontario Election ease, and on the appeal of McLeod vs. the New Brunswick Railway.

Col. Gzouzki has reported against the erection of a low level bridge at the Cetean landing acrross the St. Lawrence river. Such has >een the means taken to kill the scheme in which Ontario and the Maritime Proyincee have so deep an interest.
