Paris, Dee. 15. : General DeCourcey, commander of the k rench forces in Tonquin, has telegraphed the War Office to day that General Negrier has cleared the Marble Mountains, north of Hai Duong, of Black Flags and pirates, capturing a number of caverns, and a large quantity of arms and ammunition stored in them. One cavern was desperately de- fended, and fully one hundred pirates were killed before it could be taken. Several villages were also ably defended; but the French troops stormed their defences, and completely routed the pirates. Numerous war junks were sunk. The country has

Terrible Massacre of Christians, Rome, Dec. 15.

The College of the Propaganda announces that up to November Ist, in the Vicariate of Cochin China, nine missionaries, sixty catechists, two hundred and seventy members of religious orders, and twenty- four thousand Christians have been massacred. Two hundred parishes, seven- teen orphan asylums, and ten convents have been destroyed, and two hundrec and twenty-five churches burned.

A Nuisance.

Six,—I see by your paper, dated Decem- ber 12, a report of the Citizens’ Committee, signed J. S. Carvell, Chairman, in reference to several premises on Long Street. 1 have no doubt the places are as filthy as described—if anything, worse—having some knowledge of them from working alongside ; and it is equally true that many of the contagious diseases seem to spread more rapidly in this part of the city than in any other. But there are other reasons, apart from those filthy premises, given in the report. Of course I donot hold the Committee responsible for them. A few of the reasons I will now give. It would be well for the Committee to examine a filthy place owned by the city, on the corner of Long and Queen Streets, a place where hundreds of loads of filth are deposited at the expense of the citizens, and left there for months, sometimes a year. This filth is composed of codfish heada, lobster shells, and various other things raked up around the market and streets. If the filth is a nuisance around the market, it certainly must be in Ward 5, and an outrage on the rights of the citizens of this locality, bring- ing down the value of our property, for which we pay heavy taxes, and spreading infectious diseases in our midst. But as the Grand Jury will soon meet, we will try and have the nuisance removed. _

Another cause of the spread of disease in our midst is the sewer starting at Walker’s corner and running along Great George and Euston Streets. There are large quantities of filth collected in the bottom of the sewer along Euston Street, and sewer gas escaping at the outlets, which poison the atmosphere

Two Opinions on Riel. _ The Hon. Mr. Chapleau, who is in New York consu!ting the doctors, told a! World reporter that Riel’s execution was | & uecessity. He was convicted fairly, after an impartial trial, and it was his second offence. There was no doubt in Mr. Chapleau’s mind that the Govern- ment would be sustained if Riel were the only issue at stake. In speaking of the relations of Canada with the United States, Mr. Chapleau thonght they would be extended soon by the passage of a ew reciprocity treaty, or by legislation by Congress removing the barriers exist- ug between the two countries, Canada would welcome reciprocity with the Jnited States. Mayor Beaugrand, of Montreal, in an interview in Chicago, said to a reporter : ‘We are aow trying to unite the French against Sir John Macdonald, believing that Riel was entitled to reprieve.
