Montreal, Dec 2t.—A fire last night completely gutted the big dry good store house of 8. Greenshield, Son .& Co, one of the largest drygoods houses in Canada.
Half an hour after the fire started the roof fell in and ten minutes later one of the walls fill out into Craig Street and the other street wall into McGill street.
Seyeral firemen had narrow escapes, Loss $300,000. The fire wall separating the Greenshields building from the dry goods house of Mclatyre,Son & Co, col- lapsed, and the flames gu'ted the premises of that firm.
The.only thing that preven‘ed it from spreading was another lane.
The loss in the Melotyre stock building will reach $200,000.

Orrawa, Dec. 19.~In an assault case in Hull against Dr McK ay it wae said that the woman who was prosecuting had told ber priest in con'*ssional. The priest was cal'ed to give evidence. Objection was made on the ground that what took place at confession could not be disclosed. Jus- tice Lavergne, on crees being cited to him that such was not the case, ruled thatthe priest would bave to auswer the questions, although in the meantime the priest eaid he had nothirg to tell, ae he never re- membered the woman epeaking to him on the eubject at all.

Winnieec, Dec. 19.— James Fisher, member of the Manitoba legislature, who acccmpanied the Dominion government exploration expedition to Hudson’s Bay last year, has presented his report on the { resu'i of:he expedition to the provi icial government.
