PAINFULLY INJURED — Pain- ful but not serious burns were suf- fered about the face by Mr. Paul Cudmore. pre-medical student at Prince of Wales College yesterday morning when a mixture of chem- icals being made by another stu- dent caused an explosion. Mr. cud- more received the necessary treat- ment for his injuries at the P. 22. Island hospital.
POLICE COURT —- In City Poi- ice Court yesterday before Magist- rate Martin, it country resident charged with issuing a. check for which there was insufficient funds was remanded until the 9th. A man charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated was fined $100 and costs or 20 days. Two drunk and lncapables were fined 35 and costs or 5 days, another was given 10 days in Jail and two more were given lo and 20 days suspended sentences respectively. A vagrant on an old commitment was sent to jail for 10 days

Heads Ch'iown Rotary Club
Dr. J. H. Shaw (above). director. division of Laboratories, Provincial Health and Welfare Department, was elected president of the Char- lottetown Rotary Club at the regu- lar weekly meeting held at the Charlottetown Hotel yesterday.
Mr. William Cairns. of bower Freetown who. was guest speaker. gave the members a comprehensive and interesting account of his ex- perience and observations while touring the United Kingdom and European countries for six months under the Nufiield Scholarship hr: had been awarded.
Mr. Cairns. who represented the Maritime Provinces, Quebec and Ontario in the scholarship award. was particularly impressed wzth the extent to which farming had been mechanized in Britain. and the foreknowledge of prices on all agricultural products. before plant- ing. as supplied by the government. "The system of subsidies to farn1~ ers during the war and post \\';ir years has been extended to a marked degree," the speaker said. “and prices are guaranteed well in advance."
Farm Improvements
Farm improvements were care- fully scrutinized and when approv- ed the cosi of such improvements was borne by the Government up to as much as fifty percent. with three years leeway for the farmer to pay the balance out of income.
