McDonald, owner of the schooner *‘ Mar- garet Jane,” then lying at Railroad Whar, called at the Pioneer office for the purpose of making a statement in reference to official abuse to which he had recently been sub- jected at Sydney, Cape Breton. Capt. Me Donald says that while ashore at that place, some time in July last, he was -seized and put in jail on charge of having cut, destroyed an? cirried away six nets belonging to a man named Melsaac, while his (Mc's) schooner was in the vicinity of Port Hood. On being taken by the Sheriff. McDonald was hurri-d off to jail, without being allowed to look for a person to go his security, or even to go on boa-d his vessel to put his coat on. McD. reoresents the treatment he received in jail as rough and cruel. He says the place was filchy beyond description—a perfect dungeon with no more convenicace than if intended a» a pound for cattle. The Excise receipts for \ugust are $520,042, being an increase of $76,345 over Angust last year. The total in- crease in Customs and Excise Revenue for Jaly and August this year over corresponding months last year is 3854,972.
