Lamartine is a poet, not a historian. With the highest regard for truth, and doubtless earnestly deirous to exhibit only that which shall bear its test, 's lively imagination. his high poetical temperament, and the ardent glow of hie feelings, constantly carr him away, so thut however we may be de ighted with his style and spirit, it is impossible to feel conﬁdence in his statements and conclusions. We felt this rticulurly when reading his travels in the Silly Laud, after havin person- nlly explored many of the scenes wlliich his graphic pen had portrayed. We found, that he was alwa s more desirous of producing it strong on happy impression upon the reader's mind, than of conveying ographical and sta- tistical knowledge, of vii no to the student of the Orient.

This appears the more striking the moment that we come to read a. work in which lio_is called u n to discriminate with care, between that which is true and false, to separate (es the historian must) all ' and canvass note an facts with impartiality. Then we need the inﬂexibility of the judge, rather than the warmth and passion of the
